Weird Idling?
Hey, so I have no previous motorcycle experience, other than seeing my BF's Honda 919 or his dad's BMW RF1000. My little ninja tends to need 5-10 minutes of idling before she'll rev. It sounds like it's idling very very slow for awhile before finally sounding normal. This is rather annoying when I just want to get going! The other bikes I've seen just start right up and go.
Is this normal for a ninja? I've got an appointment to get my valves adjusted next week. Is there anything that might cause this that I should ask them about? (FYI she's a 2008 250r with ~20k miles) |

Do you turn on the choke to let it warm up first before you ride? because the 250's are fuel injected. They have to warm up first. but it shouldn't take that long!

Actually the 250 is carbureted, not injected. That is why it has a choke and takes more time to warm up than an FI bike like a 919. Does its idle speed increase with the choke on? If not it might be out of adjustment. Also these bikes are lean, the choke richens the mixture to help with starting. There should be some threads here re the choke and jetting to make the bike run better. Depending on location and jetting 5 minutes is not extreme, 10 would indicate a problem

The trick is often to just get going. The bike warms up much better under a light load rather than sitting idling. Once it's running smoothly, even if it won't rev much, getting moving down the road (being careful with the clutch to not stall it), can be all it needs.
