Passed this one up. We had a hookup at another dealer. 2012 Mustang GT Premium 5.0 6-spd auto wrapped in silver. 32K on the clock and a heck of a deal. Oh, and I'm ordering her an axle-back exhaust right now....
I now have a toy, her old 2001 Mustang GT automatic. Can you say a T-56 conversion????? For those who don't know, that is a monster 6-spd manual transmission.

Auto to manual conversion on a 13 year old pig of a car with 200whp? Yup totally worth it.

Who ever said that it was only going to have a stock motor?
Auto transmission is on its last legs. Gotta start somewhere. That thought process is like 600cc owners saying why bother modding a 250? It hardly has any power. But everyone does it anyway. Why mod a 2012 mustang gt? It only has 400hp, a lamborghini has much more. Like horsepower determines whether a vehicle is worthy of an upgrade...

Well I assumed that you knew the 4gs were inferior and that's why you owned all those 3gs.

I do see where you are coming from thinking it is a waste. But honestly, we have no desire to sell off the 01 GT. It is a little project car and we plan on owning it for a long time. I want to do a rebuild with better cams, possibly a Vortech, and the 6-spd manual with gears out back. Nothing overly fancy, just fun. It will be a "toy" that I plan on taking very good care of. I know this body style of Mustang handles badly, rides badly, but that doesn't matter to me. I just like tinkering with things and having fun. It will be a project that will evolve over the next few years.
Then again, I may change my mind and just get the transmission rebuilt. If I do that, I will get the rearend rebuilt as well and have them drop in some 4.10's.

I'm the same way, but I attach less sentimental value to things and apply more logic. I like to tinker but I also care about the final project, so it makes more sense to me to start with a platform that has more potential, and doesn't have so much working against it right from the get go.

I changed my mind. After thinking long and hard about it, I am just getting the 4R70W transmission rebuilt and installing 4.10 gears (getting the 8.8 and t-lok rebuilt at the same time). That way it won't feel like a complete slug and I won't be tossing a ton of money into it. Right now, the goal is to just to get it running good again.

Why the T-56? Unless you plan on getting boosted or really beefing up the engine it might be cheaper and easier to find a used tranny from an 03/04 Mach 1 or 99-01 Cobra.
I used to have a 2003 Mach 1...man I miss that car, it was so much fun to drive and race...if I ever find one like mine in great condition I'd pick it up in a heartbeat and do the exact same mods I did to my first one |

I almost got a mach 1 instead of my old '03 GT 5-spd. What kept me from it was it was an Auto. Otherwise I would have went with it.
The 03 was a good purchase and served me well, but it was a slug. These new 5.0's are just amazing cars. Ride is great, 6-spd auto is great, the 5.0 has a great feel to it, and the new Flowmaster's I tossed on it last night sure woke up that exhaust note. Now it "feels" like a proper car. Waiting to get the '01 back from getting AC work, then will start to evaluate what needs to be done first....

Got the '01 back today. Drove it into work. Noticed several things right away.
First, the transmission is not very steady in 3rd. So that has moved to the front of the list. While that is getting fixed, I'll have them drop in a new rear main seal, this one is leaking a little bit. I just got my 4.10's in today as well. So while the transmission is out, I'll have them rebuild the rearend as well. I'd do it, but I'd have to get a few tools. Not worth it IMHO to purchase tools that would rarely be used. I also got new spring isolators and shocks/struts. That will go on as well. While I'm under it, I will evaluate the condition of all the bushings, replacing if needed (if rear control arms have bad bushings, I'll just upgrade them). That is it for now. Like I said, just want to keep it running good.
