hypothetical cam timing question
I'm still new to all this since this is my first bike. I have a hypothetical/not so hypothetical question involving cam timing and valve adjustments. So let's say someone was conducting a valve adjustment and accidentally stripped the hell out of one of the adjustment nuts on one of the rocker arms and bought a replacement on ebay. Then took off the camshaft bearing caps to slightly lift the camshaft up just a tiny bit in order to put the replacement rocker arm in. If the teeth stayed in the same position as before, is the cam timing the same as if no one had ever touched it to begin with?

Yeah, but you should check both cam-timing anyway. Line up marks as shown in FSM. That's regular check when doing valve-adjustment. Don't skip it as can show cam-tensioner and worn cam-chain issues. You can also make up for worn cam-chain by slotting holes in cam-gear to allow some rotation relative to cams. Also do compression-test at very end when you've got everything back together.

Not sure how to reply directly. But thanks DannoXYZ. Wish I knew that before putting everything back together lol. Do you happen to know where I can get a copy of the fsm? Is it similar to the 08+ models cuz that’s all I could find online.

Best to do search online for them. Craigslist, eBay, OfferUp, local ads typically has them as well. |
