You have an iron butt? I don't think so....
I can get fatigued riding my modern bike (2012 250R) after a few hundred miles..... My friend Dave rode this bike from Kitty Hawk NC to Santa Monica CA in the 2010 Motorcycle Cannonball Rally, when the bike was a mere 98 years old. The rally is held every two years and is only for antique bikes. The bike is a 1912 Harley Davidson single. It has no transmission, has a leather belt drive, and coaster brakes. He first restored the bike to the museum quality beauty seen here. He showed it, and it was judged at 100 points by the Antique Motorcycle Club. Prior to the ride, he made some modifications for safety and to bring the bike to modern legal standards. He added a rechargable LED lighting system with the battery mounted to a rack from a '14 model, mirrors, a Klaxon horn, and a hand operated rear disk brake. He laced Kawasaki 21" rims to the hubs with dual sport tires. A padded Cushman Scooter seat was added for comfort. The rally was done in 17 stages over three weeks. The only mechanical problems encountered were a broken spoke and a wheel bearing going out. It never failed to run during the 3000+ mile trip, a testament to his restoration and mechanical skills. Upon returning home, he put the bike back to original with the excepton of one mirror, the horn, and a brakelight. He hid a small Li-ion battery in the tool box. Why? Because it's a rider! He rides it around at least once a week!

Dave rode the 2012 rally too, Times Square in NY to the Golden Gate Bridge in SF. He did it on an ugly rust bucket 1927 Harley model JD that was only mechanically restored. He said he'd never do it again on a full cosmetically restored bike, as upon coming home too much needs to be redone!

This is Dave and the '27 H-D he rode in the 2012 Cannonball Rally. He finished with a perfect score.

Dave also has a flat track / board track racer, the "Iron Dinosaur". It's a 1915 frame, a 1920 motor. It's 61 c.u. (1000cc) and runs on alcohol. No trans, direct drive, no brakes. These bikes have to be period correct, except they're required to use stainless steel spokes, modern rims and tires. It's raced once a year at the Antique Motorcycle Club of America's annual meet in Davenport Iowa. It will do 95 m.p.h. down the straights. Dave himself doesn't ride it. It's piloted by a friend who's a former pro rider. The paint scheme was designed and sprayed by the late Jeff McCann, well known painter of Arlen Ness' personal custom bikes.

Ingenious starting system for the racer built by Dave. Made from a hand truck, a Honda industrial motor, and a go-kart wheel. Before he built this set up, a beat up old Honda 90 trail bike with a sawed off back fender would be backed up against the race bike and put on the center stand. The trail bike's wheel would spin the racer's wheel. The bike runs on alcohol and is hard to start cold. Once warmed up and all the adjustments are made, the racer is then easily push started.
