Where should I live?
Just for fun...
Where should I live in 2018? I will finish my 20 years in the US Air Force at the end of 2017. I can live anywhere in the US, here are my top considerations: 1. Suburb of a large city(>150,000) 2. Within 75 miles of a major military or VA hospital 3. Most family is in Illinois(would like to be with them, but not a dealbreaker) 4. Might prefer a warmer/drier climate than Illinois 5. Diverse(we are an interracial couple with a mixed baby) 6. Gun & CCW friendly 7. We are a <$100,000 household annually **Currently in Dayton, OH. I enjoy it and may stay if I find a job. I might like something similar, or bigger** **I like the idea of the west coast, but have very little experience there. Other than COST$$$, Seattle area would be nice** Ideas???

1,2,4 & 5 all are satisfied by Northern California. But 6 & 7 would likely be dealbreakers.

Texas is pretty cheap for the most part. Dallas has a high cost of living though. Austin isn't too bad.

I guessed Texas would pop up. Never lived there long term. Spent LOTS of time on medium and long stays, just wasn't impressed. Of course the majority of that time was Wichita Falls(ugh!).

Army retiree here. Look into Greenville, SC. Very cosmopolitan, growing, some of the best roads for riding (to include Dragon), great weather, etc.

Austin TX is my vote; but it's my favorite place in the world so I'm biased. Norfolk VA is also a good location -- tons of military out there and they've got a solid open carry/ccw setup last I recall.

Central California (San Joaquin Valley), cost of living is cheaper than most of the major cities in California.

Quote:
+ Good size Air Force Base for possible employment and benefits + Boeing for possible employment + Good weather, other than hurricanes + Housing seems cheap - Heard it has had its share of crime - From the looks, might be smaller than I prefer

I love Charleston but don't know much about N. Chas. My backdoor neighbor is a tire design engineer for Michelin at Donaldson Center (formerly Donaldson AFB) and they have a lot of aviation businesses there. What was your AFSC? Are you looking for an aviation second career? I did 4 years in USAF before 21 in the Army. I was a radar mechanic on F4E's. I use Fort Jackson for most of my military retirement support, PX, Commissary, etc. I really don't use any of it much anymore. Once you've been out for a few years you tend to become very civilianized (at least I did).

I don't know if I will stay around airplanes after retirement. I will have my A&P. Just want my options to be open.
