Engine Cuts Out at Speed, then Restarts

I'm still putting together my new-to-me Y2K Ninja 250. I have about a hundred miles on her so things are going in the right direction. I had an unsettling experience today though. I was accelerating in briskly (12K+ rpm) in second or third and suddenly it just died on me. I mean, dead like zombie with a knife through its skull. No power, rpm to zero. Like I had hit the kill switch.

Now here's the weird thing. I pulled in the clutch and it came back to life! So I let the clutch out and it died again. In-alive! Out-dead! Several times. I noticed that even when the clutch was in I had rpm readings, but no real power with the throttle.

After what seemed like an eternity but was probably 5-10 seconds it all came back to life. I was able to ride normally, accelerate, etc. The entire sequence happened a few more times during the next five miles, then it went away and I rode home (20+ miles) normally.

So, wtf? It certainly felt electrical. Sidestand switch or kill switch? I could also believe it was a fuel issue, except for the fact that pulling in the clutch seemed to revive it immediately. To my knowledge the clutch switch only acts in conjunction with the starter relay. Right?

I need you guys to verify something for me. On my bike I can put it in gear with the sidestand down. The bike will run until I start to let out the clutch, then it dies. I've never seen that before. On every bike I've owned putting it in gear with the sidestand down simply kills the engine. Is mine working correctly? I can't really read an electrical diagram, but it appears that the sidestand switch and clutch switch interact in some manner.

You're on the right track. If the sidestand switch thought the stand was down, then letting out the clutch would stop the ignition.

Thanks. Man, that strikes me as a weird setup. I've put 40,000 miles on various Kawasakis and never noticed that.

A lot of bikes are like that, like my 2020 MT-07. I assume it's the norm now. I knew a guy who lived in England who died when his 1972 motorcycle's stand was down and it threw him into oncoming traffic when he made a left turn. I don't mind the interlock at all, but if it acts up and kills ignition when it shouldn't, it would certainly be startling.

Looks like a sidestand switch issue. Bad contact or switch or harness. Mine behaves exacly like you describe. Let the clutch out when in gear and the side stand down and it kills the engine

Thanks guys. the wires from the switch disappear into the bowels of the bike. Any idea where the plug is if I want to bypass the sidestand switch to see if that's the problem? Is it on the right side somewhere?

Is there any chance the problem is mechanical? Like the spring isn't retracting the stand properly maybe.

It all looks and feels OK. The wire was routed in a strange manner. It was pulled completely taut. I rerouted it. Maybe that will fix it.

I'd still like to now where to jump the sidestand switch, if anyone knows where the plug is located.
