starter idle gear

i replaced my alternator cover to day and when i was re-installing it i noticed the starter idle gear could move in and out. is this supposed to be pushed in so that the teeth of it connect with the teeth of starter motor clutch gear? ive put the cover back on but havent put n the fluids and try to crank it. thx

The engine cover will stop the sprocket from falling out of where it is supposed to be.

I'm not sure if it is possible to put the cover back on without the starter gear lining up with the grooves in the big sprocket(on crank) and the starter motor spindle gear thing.

Last time I installed mine, the gear almost fell out when I was puttting the cover on. I did have it all lined up though so everything was good.

here's a picture to explain better. when i took of the cover Blue was sticking out like it is in the pic. b4 i put cover back on i pushed back Blue so that its gears where in contact with Red's.

Yeah thats the correct way.

I'm pretty sure the engine cover keeps it from falling out of the grooves.

ok i thought so. when i pulled alt cover off it moved forward to where it wasnt contacting the big gear behind the fly wheel. i pushed it back cuz it kinda seemed like it was suppossed to be in contact with it. was pretty sure thats how it went and made sense to me, but wanted a 2nd opinion.
