MSF question

So I just started a new job (woot!!!!!) It's full time 2nd shift though, this means I am not sure if they will allow me to take a friday off to take the full 3 day course (something I will ask at orientation) I saw that there is a beginner 2 "licence waver" course that is one day 8 hours and requires you have your own bike. Is this course just as good? Has anyone taken one of these?

It seems that that course requires "A valid motorcycle permit, license, or endorsement."

https://training.msf-usa.org/res/str...8lcFDrOw%3d%3d

The Basic Course must be 15 hours, which some providers split in two days: Saturday and Sunday.

Basic courses around here are either a "3 day" which is Friday evening, all day Saturday, part day Sunday or "2 day" which is 8+ hours each day, often available in the middle of the week.

My course was a 3 day, my daughter and one son was a 2 day on the weekend, and my other sons was a 2 day on a Monday, Tuesday.

I haven't found one where they do that in my state. I work afternoon so I could like mornings or weekends. I tried both the ABATE website and the MSF website.

Worth asking but i think you will still need to take the DMV (or equivalent out there) test. The BRC2 won't have the test for the waiver, at least not the one i took here.

In NJ you take a test for the permit and then a "on rode" for the endorsement.
Not sure how different it is by you. It's a state to state thing.

You in Bloomington IL or IN?

Looks like IL requires a 20 hr course which is usually Friday evening, all day Saturday and all day Sunday. Probably not going to work with your job.

If you are in IN it looks like their course is 15-20 hrs, but they offer some 4 day courses from 8am to 1 PM each day, which would work for you. Bad news, the next one of those available is in September.

Indiana, and yeah, there are a lot already booked. It's kind of frustrating because less than 5 days after the schedule was released it was booked until July, now until august/September!

Sorry, I have not. The single day Sat/Sun courses books up almost instantly, with both students and coaches.

Saddly, I haven't done a msf in 2yrs now. I need to get back into it more.

You just got a new job, and have a previously scheduled commitment. let them know, If possible, any new employer should respect the previous commitment, and respect you for upholding your prior commitment.

Just show up early to the convenient one if it's not too far. There's bound to be a no show. That's how I got in.

I'll have to try that. The closet one is an hour away. I did contact the one that did it last year in the town i live in, they said they MIGHT start doing them again, I needed to contact them in two weeks, then they will know for sure! But they said they might offer the saturday sunday "full" msf course! I'll contact them in two weeks and see.
I did end up calling my new job and asking them about requesting that friday off that I had planned on going to the MSF course. They said absolutely no days off in the first 8 week (probationary period) So i'll have a msf course i can work with.

Last minute cancellations are common and the provider may give a discount to whoever covers those in a short notice.

WHAAAAT What kind of job is this? What if you were dying and you had to call in sick? What if you had already planned a vacation before you were hired? What if a close family member/friend died? They won't let you take ONE day off? That's great you found a new job & you're excited about it, but I just think that's a crazy rule.

As long as you get it done before your permit expires you'll be fine.

I'm not endorsing it, but the 'no' Z received doesn't strike me as odd.
Dying? Then they need a replacement anyway.
Planned a vacation? Why didn't you disclose it prior to the offer?
Close family died? That'd be covered by the company's bereavement policy in my industry. Separate from normal PTO.
From my perspective, starting off with 'I need to do something other than start working on the start date we agreed' is not sending a positive signal. ..but I'm a little off topic.

My employers have all spoiled us I guess!
They understand that things come up and if you have to take a day off or call in, they're ok with that. They trust us to get the job done. And no one has ever abused this "privilege"
But this is going off-topic.

But I am curious as to why it wasn't brought up when you were offered the job..? Weren't you registered for the course already?

I thought a job with 401k, amazing medical and dental and a company that pays for your tuitions was a little more important than "hey uhh I have this thing I have to do on a Friday night, so I can't train that day you want me to, cause ya know, my motorcycle class is more important than this amazing job." Yeah I could have brought it up during the interview, but wouldn't that have looked bad? I mean this is a really good company. They could replace me in a second.

It wouldn't have looked bad. I've been in many different types of jobs and in my experience, as long as you tell them up front they are cool. Some were concert tickets that had been bought months in advance, others were for more important things. You could have gone along the lines of "I thank you so much for offering me this position. However, I do have a class that I had to sign up for months in advance to get into and it's non refundable. It falls on these hours that you have me training. Would we be able to work around that?"

If after that they said "no" I would have to think about accepting the offer, but that's just me.

I don't know if you guys understand how hard it is to get a good job. I have been working two for 4 years now, trying to get a full time one the whole time.
Anyway this is a bit off topic. I'm in the process of waiting to hear back from my school I signed up with. They will allow me to change what class I'm in, and they said it is very likely they will start offering a Saturday Sunday course very soon. So yay me

Yeah I could have brought it up during the interview, but wouldn't that have looked bad? I mean this is a really good company. They could replace me in a second.
Good jobs are important to adults.

While it may not lead to your license, see if you can get some private instruction from an MSF coach to increase your skills while you are still on your permit. Ride on your permit until you can take the class you need in September. Or if your state allows just take the license test.

Several of our bike schools around here offer "Head Start" or private one on one lessons.

I know, and I'm glad you found a great job!
I'm also saying that a good employer will honor your perviously planned commitments.
I once had a coworker newly hired go on vacation her second week because it already been planned months prior. It was never counted against her.

Just letting you know for the future unless you plan on staying at this job forever

One of my friends that works there said i should talk to the lead of my department once i am properly placed they MIGHT allow me to work 10 hour days M-Th and have that friday off as a one time thing but it depends on the boss of that department. WE'll see, this might work out, but if not, i can always have an alternative plan

You seem motivated enough to get to a working solution OP. All in due time I'm sure.

But this is going off-topic.
I've had very understanding, easy going employers much like you describe. Timing is the issue I wanted to highlight. Trusting an employee with demonstrated features is vastly different than trusting a new hire you still have to train. Whats the saying, 'trust is earned'?

Exactly. It has to be addressed either way. Problems are better addressed sooner than later, imo. They rarely shrink when delayed, and they occasionally grow.
