Re-use old head gasket ?

Ok, Ok, I know, of course I shouldn't re-use an old head gasket, but I want to get the bike running in a hurry and it's a bank holiday here in the UK. I've carefully scraped the old gasket cement off, should I use a very thin smear of gasket sealant on it, try it dry, or am I doomed to failure ??

Yup, never reuse a head gasket. For real. You will end up having to tear it down again and waste more time tring to fix it, rather than riding it.

OK, thanks for the comments, it's going downhill anyway now, I need a special spanner for adjusting the valve clearances, and I may have made a mistake with the cam chain tension. I timed the cams up as per the manual, set the tensioner, but when turning the motor over, even slowly, the chain is going slack at the front and the ex cam is skipping.

Just off to bed with my factory manual, to re-read and see what I've missed

Just for clarity: Head gaskets typically have a metal "fire" ring at the combustion chamber. This ring is designed to crush to fit as the head bolts are torqued, and as such it stays permanently deformed. There is a high risk of failure of the fire ring when head gaskets are reused because it won't crush properly the second time around.

You've got to bear in mind in 33 years of riding bikes and working on them, this is the first watercooled bike I've owned, (the other 40+ were aircooled), and often you could get away with re-using a head gasket. Triumph copper gaskets are the best, anneal them each time and re-use them ad infinitum.....

Things change a bit when you start putting out 150 horsepower per liter...

Hehehe... but it has lots of low-end torque!

100HP/L was a big deal when manufacturers were able to obtain it reliably, much like 1HP/Cu.Inch was back in the muscle car days. To put it in context, at 150HP/L a 5.7L car motor would be making 855HP. That's a lot. The main way bikes do it is with RPM, since HP is a function of torque and RPM. Smaller motors can spin higher RPMs.
