New rear tire & brake pads....wheel hard to spin after installing caliper
2004 ninja 250r
Got a new rear tire...rear pads were thin so got new pads. Put everything back together and the rear wheel was hard to rotate. it APPEARS that The outside (right side) pad is being pushed against the rotor. I pushed the caliper pistons all the way back before installing pads. I've attached photos... would love any thoughts or ideas THANK YOU!!! |

Check out the "similar threads" on the bottom of this same page. Could it be the same issue?

This happened to mine, one of the caliper pistons was stuck and not retracting. I would pull it off and see if the pistons move.

Did you grease slider-sleeve? Stuff inside rubber boots? Should be able to slide them back & forth easily so caliper can balance pressure on each side.

I stared at it some more....
I should have noted that the caliper goes ON the rotor just fine...it's only when I tighten the caliper bolts down...the wheel becomes harder to move. It's Almost like the rotor is a bit too close to the caliper bracket. I wonder if the spacing is messed up somehow. I'll have to look at axle adjusters and spacers to see what's going on here. |

I strongly recommend the the caliper gets serviced with every pad change.
I've done a write up on the subject. If you can't find it, here it is one more time. I recommend that every time you change your pads, you service the calipers, he's my write-up to help you out. It should fix your initial problem, and keep your calipers in top working order. Quote:
I also recommend flush and fill with new brake fluid, also I'd go with 5.1DOT. No matter what kind of brake fluid you choose, always periodically flush and fill with new fluid. This is the one I use https://m.motul.com/ca/en-us/product...-1-brake-fluid Also inspect the brake lines, replace is needed, http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Stainle..._lines_upgrade Quote:
On my 91 EX500 I have Spiegler, in orange to match that bike. Quote:
When it comes to safety items like brakes, when in doubt, throw them out, it's your safety in your hands, and is cheaper than a visit to the ER. Buy quality pads,I personally recommend EBC brand either the HH, or the Extreme HH. EBC full floating rotor, replace the OEM rubber line with a stainless steel braided brake line, cheaper than replacing them with OEM. On my 500 I have Spiegler line http://www.spieglerusa.com/brakes/cy...line-kits.html On my Ninja 250 i went with Venhill http://www.venhillusa.com/products.html With all that, it will stop on a dime, and leave you nine cents in change. look here http://ebcbrakes.com/products/motorcycle/ And also read this, http://www.ex-500.com/wiki/index.php...otors_and_Pads That should answer any questions you might have.

for those following along....long story short
one of the outer 'tabs' on the inner brake pad that should sit in the groove of the mounting bracket...was popping out and getting BEHIND the mounting bracket. Of course when you tighten the caliper to the bike, the pad would PUSH the caliper bracket into the rotor. I put the outside pad on first like youtube videos showed...but I'd RECOMMEND putting the Inside brake pad on First to get that perfect THEN put the outside pad on. Easier to avoid this issue |

Sounds like you got it figured out, but as noted above - clean the entire caliper and clean/lube the sliding pins when you put in new pads.
Another thing that can make a rotor drag is rear wheel misalignment. |
