Don't forget the Triumph Scrambler as well.

Of course for the hipsters who don't want to search for that "vintage" CB in excellent condition, there's always the little Hipsette 250

As for old CBs being sold more than when they were new, that's probably not true. If you adjust for inflation I bet they're down from their new prices. Maybe some harder to find models might be higher, but I'd bet most are lower.
Not sure what the cumulative inflation rate is from the mid 70s to the mid 2010s.

So let's forget all this nice fancy time value of money stuff and look at it from a different perspective......if I had purchased a 1970s CB350 (for under $800 brand new from the dealership) and rode it for 40 years, it would be able to sell it today for more than double what I paid for it 40 years ago.

If that is not amazing to you for a little Japanese bike, I don't know what is. Think of another mass produced vehicle that held its value like this. Not easy....as most vehicles lose money right when you drive it off the dealer's lot.

Let's not forget all that fancy time value of money stuff! If I declare the average rate of inflation to be 4% over the last 40 years (some years, of course, it was less, but some years [like when Reagan was president] it was closer to 16%), then that $800 then would be equivalent to $3841 today.

So that guy in Westchester is breaking even on his initial investment. Of course, if he bought them new, then he got to enjoy them for the 40 years. But he also had to license, insure, maintain, and store them.

We own bikes for love, not for money.

Motto for all my bicycles/motorbike.

Car is just the reliable but still kinda fun DD. It just gets maintenance (and small upgrades when it's time to replace parts anyway)

It seems like it's mostly older guys that didn't want a Harley, but wanted something just as expensive, but couldn't take the riding position of a top of the line supersport. Then they just use it to ride around town

Also, IMO any bike can be an "adventure" bike.
For sure, any bike can be. I did a 2400 mile trip (on the ninja) with my friends, most of them on GS' I did it, it was ok. It's definitely not the right tool for the job, for me.

Now my tenere actually seems to be the right tool for every job. I bought it at the beginning of July. I've now put almost 6000 miles on it, I pack up my work gear, a table, chair, cart, laptop and some tools, and I've done 400 mile days to get to plants. The lack of cargo space really limits the ninja.

The tenere has almost completely replaced my car since I bought it, it's the most expensive vehicle I've ever bought, and I'm glad I finally bought a bike I wanted, instead of trying to make something into the one I want. And I'm not old. Lol

The pre-gen is better for touring. It's got way more room for luggage, lighter weight, and longer range. Easily 300+ miles on a tank. Not many motos that can do that except for the real ADV bikes with huge tanks. 70-75 mpg helps lol

And I've done quite a bit of gravel roads on the 250, it's not too bad but that's as far as I would take it.

Lol, 70-75... More like 60 max after you account for jetting improvement and nearly 10% speedo error.

I've only ever gotten 70mpg once and that was when I was new, on a stock bike, pussyfooting around. Now I get 60 pretty consistently for all kinds of riding. Still not bad range considering the darn thing has a little over 4 gallons before hitting reserve.

For commuting around town, to school and back with a mix of city and freeway driving I averaged 62 mpg on my pre-gen. The bike is completely stock when it comes to the intake/exhaust and has 15t front 42t rear sprockets.

During my 2,000 mile trip I averaged around 70 mpg and on one stretch through Virginia (where you could still get real gas with no ethanol) I did 300 miles between stops without ever switching to reserve. Averaged out to 75 mpg.

Keep into account that I was sticking to the backroads on this trip as much as possible where speeds were quite a bit slower than on the freeway. So pretty much ideal conditions for max mpg.

Speed makes a ton of difference. Backroads at 55 are that sweet spot for mileage. All we have around here is ethanol mixed gas as well.

I used to get over 70 mpg on my pre-gen 250.
Since GasSavers changed to Fuelly, I have not kept up with my gas log.

looking at the photo you posted, Im not convinced. extra weight and lack of aerodynamics will eat away at gas milage.

What about me?> Sometimes I am a hipster squid!

lol the bottom line is some people love to hate.

Some people goin hate on the sport bike riders with their power ranger uniforms.... other people going to hate on the the Harley brand obsession.

hating is a hobby just like dressing funny and ridding whatever bike some body slapped together with zip ties and duct tape.

I would totally ride with these hipsters

rounding down, with just a 15t sprocket and some crude tuning (making it run richer, actually), I've gotten 61 while both commuting to school on the highway, and going fast and redlining the bike sometimes. And I'm not one of those people that likes to lie on the internet to feel good, either. Just being honest. Maybe my bike's magic.

well... 60 and "like 60" are identical as far as I'm concerned. My "like 60" was a total spitball.

And yes, I'm right there too. about 60 all the time, no matter how I ride. Unless it's track days, then I'm in the 35-40 range.

Hipsters... and hipsters riding pretty cool bikes. Two totally different opinions apply. In the end, as long as they enjoy the ride and respect the spirit of the ride, it's all good.

So long as the superiority complex and attitudes stay home, I'm good with it.
