How to on water pump replacement

I swear I looked for one before asking!

Does this exist? I need to replace the pump on my wife's 06 Ninja 250. There's just a few small drips coming from the weep hole on the pump and I'm 99% certain it needs to be swapped.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, you're right, when the bike gets over a decade old and the miles start to add up coolant leaking from the little hole at the bottom of the water pump indicates a worn out pump assembly. It's okay, the manufacturer views this item as a "consumable" and a replacement water pump is usually not that expensive. And the remove-and-replace is quick, straightforward, simple. It'll take longer to drain the coolant and then refill it than the actual work replacing the pump itself.

So is there a How To any place? Looking specifically for a short cut if possible. JUST changed the oil and I'm guessing I'll need to again now.

Unless I can lean it waaaay over? Thoughts?

I'm to assume these pumps aren't replaceable? I looked once I got home and remembered, this is a used one I installed two summers ago. eBay purchase. I'd like to avoid doing this every few years.

Thanks. Was being lazy and hoping to avoid changing oil with 100 miles on it.

Just to be certain, there is NO rebuild available for these? I'd rather rebuild it, if possible rather than gamble on another used one.

Well, if you drain oil into clean container, I don't see why you can't put it back in.

As for rebuilding, not sure where you'd get shaft seal. Which is part that wears out. And bearing. You can follow along with what's done here:

Coolant plays big part in water-pump longevity. Say no to Dexcool. Only use phosphate-free and silicate-free coolants.

Thanks Danno. Guess I gotta decide if I want to roll the dice on another used pump.

I say tear apart old pump and measure everything. You may be able to match up seals with what's listed in that thread. Bearings are commodity items you can get anywhere, bike-shops, skate-shops, etc.

Are you really so cheap that 2 quarts is worth saving? Think of it as an engine oil flush.

As for swapping, it's literally just a few bolts and pull it out. FYI: pregens and newgens use the same pump.

It would cost you more to rebuild than to replace; depending on what your time is worth to you anyhow

Ordered a new/used pump off of eBay and installed today. Leaks worse than the one it replaced. Grrrr.

Can anyone confirm if the water pump off of a Ninja 300 will fit? They look identical and can get one with super low miles off a wrecked bike.

Thoughts? It's my wife's bike and I want her safe. If the 300 pump isnt an option, I'll just order a new one and be done with it.

Nevermind. Won't work. Did some digging. The 300 is shorter.

If you're going to buy off eBay, make sure seller has guarantee or money-back.
