Removing Ninja decals

Im trying to remove the Ninja decals on the sides and replace them with some other decals. I used a blow dryer to heat them up and they came off fairly easily, but they left a ton of residue. I started trying to take it off with Goo Gone but it just seemed to clump it all up and wasn't really removing too much. After a while I stopped trying to rub it off with that stuff and wound up washing off the goo gone as I didnt want it to mess up the paint. I've removed decals on other bikes before using this method without any problems.

Does anyone have any secret solutions or techniques to use for this? thx in advance.

WD-40 and goo-gone have worked for all decals I've ever removed, but I haven't tried the specific ones you're trying to remove.

Thanks Alex. I've tried both of those solutions and neither has worked that great. Someone suggested using a 3m product called clear safe adhesive remover or something like that. I'm going to hit up the store and see how it goes.

I used a sticker eraser. It attaches to your drill and removes stickers and the residue without hurting the paint. I paid $15 for it at my local auto paint store.

goo gone is freaking caustic. imo

Old soft denim and some elbow grease. work it from every direction. It'll take alittle time but it'll come of. Then buff off the fine residue with an old cotton T and spit. That's Redneckin it.

Exactly what problems you had with the Goo Gone? We use it a work, because it's safe to use on almost everything.

I'm not saying it would work to remove the residue from the sticker, I'm just curious why you are saying it is caustic, because that's far from my experience with this product.

mind sharing what in particular? we use it all the time on different materials and I would like to avoid damage to the type that caused you problems.

Sorry Sorry Sorry I was thinking of Goof-Off when I said that.
Goof-Off is pure xylene a medium-high strength solvent that dissolves many plastics

How ever Goo-Gone and WD40 can both damage certain plastics so you might want to test on a small inconspicious area first. I'd probably not use it on/near the windshield either. . .

I Took off the ninja decal and put a custom one on i used nail polish and buffed it with a dry rag after and it took a while but came out pretty nice..and with what i couldnt get off after that i used a fine card (ex: blockbuster movie card) or a credit card would work to get the little parts off

Finally got all the residue off. When I peeled the other side it looked like the vinyl of the decal had perfectly separated from the adhesive, leaving the adhesive still on the bike. I found a can of this 3m stuff and it worked like a champ. Just spray it on and let it sit for a minute or two then with a little bit of elbow grease the adhesive rubs right off. The can says its safe for painted surfaces, etc but I still washed the section of the bike right after (you can never be too careful!) For anyone interested, here's a pic of the can I used and a pic of the new CF decal. sorry about the resolution-still using a camera phone ATM...

Ok another question re Decals and vinyl- what do you use to cut holes in the vinyl so that you can access screws and bolts etc? Is there a tool or technique to cutting a perfect nickel sized circle in vinyl?

When you use chemicals on your bike I recommend putting some wax back on that area just to keep things in check.

thanks. I did know that Goof Off doesn't work as well as Goo Gone and that it affects materials in different ways. Isn't it amazing that the names are so similar that one could end up buying the wrong product?

When using these products, on a car or bike, cleaning (washing) the area after use and waxing is always a good idea.

Yeah their names are very similiar hence the mix up. Goof-off is pretty nasty stuff and I think someone can always find something better to use for the task at hand especially when working on an important surface/material. It even smells bad...like a refinery or something. Goo-gone is decent and I don't think it can harm very many surfaces.There are alot of different types of goo-gone products by the way http://www.magicamerican.com/googone/products.aspx
So I guess being specific can help some people when recommending the product.

+1 on waxing after.

Sorry That did come to mind when I replied. There is always to achieve a desired result. But we need more details. Is it already on the bike? Is it vinyl?

Its a vinyl sheet but its not on the bike yet. I'm going to cut a piece to go over a part of the fairing which happens to have a screw in it. Rather than just cover the access to the screw with the vinyl, I'd like to cut a hole in the vinyl where the screw goes prior to applying it. My main concern is that I can cut the hole in a relatively uniform circle so that it doesnt look like crap and I can still access the screw to remove the fairing if I need to.

Id Tryit with two needles tied together with a piece of string. stick one needle into the center of the hole as an anchor and use the other to create the hole. you have to keep them pretty straight upright to get it uniform and might want to put it on top of a piece of styrofoam first. just an idea.

or try a soldering iron if you have one.

You could use a piece of piping the same size you want the hole. File the ends of the pipe so they are sharp, then use the pipe as a giant hole puncher by laying it on the vinyl sheet and striking it with a hammer. Use something relatively hard as a backing, but also with some give to it. stiff cardboard comes to mind or some old vinyl flooring tiles... something like that. experiment a bit and you'll end up with a bunch of vinyl hole stickers so you can just peel it off anytime you want to access the screw and just use a new one after you put the screw back on.
