Replacing a valve stem

Does anyone have experience with this? Is it difficult to do on your own? Of course being Sunday no bike shops around me are open, and it just happens to be the nicest day of the year so far.

you have to break the bead on at least one side of the tire-rim to get to the stem hole, then pull a new valve stem through from the inside, use dish soap for lube on the stem. carefully grab the valve stem below the threads with a pliers (or use a valve stem puller if you have one) until the stem is seated. Lube the bead of the tire with the soapy water and inflate, keep your fingers (and everything else) out of the bead!!

Have ant tips on breaking the bead? I'm afraid of hurting my rim or tire

If your careful you may get it with a c-clamp, other than that you'd need to take the wheel off, lay it on the floor and lever the tire down till it pushes off the bead lock on the rim.

I use large C-clamp to break bead. Use block of wood on fixed far side between clamp and wheel to not scratch it.

Rules require metal stems, so I just got a set of these. for my track bike and road bike. Never ever have to worry about cracked leaking valve stems again!!!

I like Drag Specialties valve stems. They thread in and are very sturdy.

Since you're replacing the valve stem you should consider getting an angled valve stem for easier tire pressure checks and fill ups.

^^ +1

Much easier to access.

I got my 90 deg valve stems from Bike Master for two different bikes. They worked well. 11.3mm valves. Torque to 7 ft/lb.
