'08 crf 150r

Picked-up this non-running '08 CRF150R this week -

Wasn't raced like most Rs, but is in need of plenty of TLC and a bunch of parts.

I was recently at the supermoto races in Shawano, WI, and the 150R was recommended as a bulletproof SM bike for adults.

We talked to a couple racers from NJ that were there running them and loved them. Not as maintenance intensive as some others either.

What did it cost if you don't mind me asking? The weapon of choice around here is a KX65 with a 72cc kit on it but I REALLY don't want to fold up on one of those - would prefer a little more room.

I paid $1350 for it, but it isn't running and it needs plenty of parts and maintenance.

This is the standard "R" version. For more room you would want the "CRF150RB" or Big Wheel version.

i had a crf150 for a couple years. guy before me rode the wheels off it, i did the same, and sold it. was always a dang solid bike. i bounced off the rev limiter 99% of the time, (68mph).
was back in the early 2000's. four strokes have sure changed since then. lol

Well, we tried...

Turns out it's not going to be as easy as I hoped (surprise!)

The kid I bought it from didn't tell me the whole truth, just said it sat for a couple years and wouldn't start.

Truth is it's not running because he or someone messed it up. First clue was a lack of air filter (!), and after not firing up when it should have we pulled the valve cover to find one of the cam lobes was GROUND DOWN! Like there's a bent valve and they GROUND the cam down so it wouldn't hang open. 0 clearance on the exhaust valves as well.

I think the cam timing is off as well, but it needs to have the head pulled to see just what's going on (nothing good...). It may need rings, piston, cylinder, valves, etc. - but it for sure needs a cam.

So no good news this weekend. Honestly, I expected to find a few rookie things but not quite this much.

Those are awesome play bikes. Wouldn't mind having one.

Bummer about the shotty DIY maintenance. I've had a lot of very neglected used dirtbikes over the years. Some of the things i've seen or had to deal with boggles the mind. Something that is pretty easy and not that expensive to deal with and they try and save a few bucks and rig something together ect... and it causes a huge headache further down the road.

Good luck

Haven't pulled the head off yet, but I'm pretty sure of what I'll find. When these, and many other race 4-strokes, are over-revved on downshift or no load the cam gear/hub will spin on the cam. It's pressed-on and not staked or tacked apparently. Usually that puts the valves in contact with the piston.

If you don't know it and reassemble everything with the timing marks lined up the valves will still hit, or if it's not enough to make contact the bike just won't start. So even though this one had the cam messed-up, I'd still need to replace it most likely. At least I know it.

Had some time at work, so I powder coated the pipe heat shield and valve cover in a gold texture powder very similar to what Honda uses on Magnesium covers.

If it was in decent shape, and running, it would be a super deal.

Most good ones are in the $2500 range, but I saw one like ours listed the other day for $3500.

As the OP knows These crf150r are race bikes and more maintenance then the 150f which is a play bike. Maybe you can score an engine somewhere.

Good luck, looks like you got your hands full.

One of the guys I used to ride with years ago at USAIR had a 150R with a seriously cool supermoto setup of mag wheels off of a KTM 125 GP bike. Let me see if I can find a pic of it.

I rode it and it was a seriously flickable fast and fun bike.

Back in those days I was on a CRF450R with a sumo treatment and a KTM690. But today I'm on a Z125 and strangely enough I'm having the same amount of fun.

If you're getting to kart tracks around the area we might have to meet up sometime. The Road America Motorplex now has 100% new asphalt all the way around and kicks ass as much as USAIR does.

^ I have seen that CRF with the Marchesini wheels - nice! I saw that he, and his buddy with a similar bike, both sold them (for a very reasonable price, considering the upgrades).

Ordered a factory Honda Service Manual last week, so I'm getting ready to see what other surprises are in store!

Really, I'm not that surprised or upset. I've been really lucky buying non-running bikes in the past, but my luck was going to run out sooner or later. I've had good luck selling used dirt bikes in good condition, and actually made money on our last XR I sold after owning it for about 8 years.

We could have easily got this one running and blown it up ourselves - so it's not out of the ordinary. I'll go through it completely, and fix anything that is needed.

I'll have to get to RA for some SuMo races next season. It's a bit closer for me than Shawano.

We have a "150F" and now a "R". The "F" is pretty tall, and pretty tame - even after a few mods.

I'm hoping to be able to repair what's damaged and not need to replace the engine completely. From what i have learned about the situation so far, that should be doable.

Yeah when the 4 stroke MX market took off 250 2T became 450 4T, 125 2T became 250 4T, and Honda thought 85 2T would become 150 4T so they went in that direction and replaced the CR85R with the CRF150F.

Aah yeah I know the other guy too, sold the 150R to focus on CCS racing. Probably needed to fund race bike parts. Actually that's why I sold my old CRF450R. Heh bikes come and go. But those guys knew a guy who did the machining to make those sick KTM Marchesini wheels and brakes work.

BTW, if you stay mini with the wheels, check this option out:
https://www.supermotojunkie.com/show...CRF150R-RB-500

Surprisingly, there are some awesome race rubber options available in 12". I run some of them on my Z125.

I highly desire a chance to tear around on a 150R with 12s and good stick rubber. Less weight and double the power of my Grom...... yes please.

Oh, I just tried from my phone where I'm not logged in and I can't get there either I guess you have to be a member to get acces to the for sale section. And I can't remember my Supermotojunkie password, Lol.

But that guy is selling new full mag wheel mini conversion kits for a 150R with brakes and caliper bracket for $500 it looks like.

These are big in Europe with lots of cheap options and I think he imports them to the US.

Have a look at some of what this place sells:

https://www.gloucesterbikespecialist...toaccessorries

I have to laugh at the cute little 12" tire warmers. They take their minis serious over in the UK.

Update of the CRF150R -

This is what I found -

This is what the cam looked like -

The 2 inside lobes are the intakes, and are operated directly, the 2 outside lobes are the exhausts and are operated off of rockers. The closest intake lobe is half gone.

The sprocket mounting hub that is pressed onto the cam, and will slip in the right conditions -

This is where we are at now after 2 new intake valves, seals, springs, tappets, and cutting of the valve seats. Installed the new piston, rings, gaskets, etc, and torqued the head. The bore looked good, and was just cleaned and lightly deglazed.

Need to get the new cam and sprocket hub pinned before installing it so it can't slip and start the process all over again.

Just completed the CRF150R top-end rebuild.

Assembled the engine and fired it up the other day, and it ran, but not well. We ran it a bit and pulled the valve cover to re-check the valve adjustment. 3 of 4 valves had changed, so we needed to get the proper shims and reset them. We tack-welded the cam sprocket mount on the new cam so it can't spin and make a mess again.

When I purchased the bike the owner (kid) said it "had been sitting a while" and wouldn't start - which was a half-truth to say the least. After pulling the carb and not finding debris or varnish in the floatbowl, I gave it a quick cleaning and reassembled it. After checking it closer today we found the Pilot Jet was obstructed. Removed and cleaned it, set the valves, and it fired up first kick and idled decent. It still needs a few more parts, but it's together and ride-able.

Spent about $700 on parts and machine work to get it going, and it still needs a chain/sprockets and a few other parts. Overall I'm going to have about what it's worth in it. No deals here...

It just left in the back of my son's pick-up. He is planning to ride it on the dirt a bit and eventually set it up for Supermoto competition.

Sold it to him for (almost) what I got in it...

Got the CRF150R all back together, with new tires and chain/sprockets, and finally took it for a spin!

The thing is a monster for a small bike. You can't believe how powerful it is for just 150 ccs.

My oldest son has been riding a 200cc KTM 2-stroke, and he was shocked at how fast the 150 is.

Not a trail bike by any means, and likes to be WOT as much as possible. He plans to Supermoto race it, but for our normal riding it would be too much of a handful to be fun.

Thanks Gordon.

We definitely didn't get a "deal" on it when it was all said-and-done, but it's running strong now and should be good for a while.

For the most part what we replaced was normal wear items for a race bike, and we have about what it's worth in it, but it is all fresh and should be bullet-proof now.

Just the way it idles (poorly due to the extreme cam timing most likely) and how fast the revs pick-up tells you this thing means business. My son (22) kept saying how he can't believe young kids ride/race these things.

My son is heading to the Supermoto track at Road America with a buddy from work this weekend that races a CRF to check out the SuMo scene.

On a side note, he also bought this over the weekend to replace his older KTM 200-

Looking to do his first SuMo trackday at the RA track shortly.

Had it out over the holiday with the dirt wheels on it, and he says it's not bad on the dirt.

He describes the engine as "pissed-off". More work to ride than his new YZ250X, but worth the effort.

Had it out last week at the Road America SuMo track, and had a great time (mostly).

The bike ran great, and my son was getting in the groove - just as he got punted off the track by a 450 rider that stuffed him and took out his front end. Dumba** could have just waited for the next straight...

Bent the radiator significantly, but he wasn't hurt.

At the most recent track day, after being punted off the track (rubber on the radiator shroud and fork leg) -

He's heading to US Air this weekend for another track day on the 150. Coworker is loaning him his Aprilia 450 for the day also. I'll post pix of that when I get them.

From this weekend's track day at US Air -

Had the track to himself for almost 2 hours at one point. The Aprilia didn't materialize.

He said the CRF150R (4-stroke) is faster than a similar CR85 (2-stroke). I expected they would be almost exactly the same.

We have done a few small mods to the CRF, but it's mostly stock. Last time at home we replaced the (weak) single-piston front caliper with a 450 dual-piston caliper - which helped a lot. Also removed the wire mesh inside the air filter frame and increased the Main Jet to compensate. All improvements so far.

Suspension is next on the list.

Hey were you guys there last weekend for the track day they did in place of the cancelled Lightning on the wolf races? Sounds like not many showed up. I was thinking of heading there myself but I couldn't make it. A lot of supermoto racers were pissed off that got cancelled. Not sure about the story or whose fault it was.

Weather permitting I'll be at the RA motorplex on this coming Sunday. Rare weekend track day there. If you guys make it say hi to the old man on the little red Z125.

I was at RA motorplex checking out the supermoto races they put on during ARHMA/Rockerbox weekend. Quite a crowd there racing.
