Compression testing out of frame?

So I picked up my old Ninja from my parents after my father wrecked it and then let it sit for a year. Long story short, he wrecked it, clutch cable broke and it broke the shifter. We installed a new clutch cable and adjusted it but it wouldn't shift up into second gear. He took it to a shop, they checked the cabled and adjustment, and drained the oil and then removed the clutch and basket. They returned it to him dry and with the clutch/basket in a box and said it looks like its internal and would be uneconomical to fix it and that's how it sat for a year.

I've already torn into it and gotten the engine removed, I'm realizing now I should have compression tested it prior to removing it (DOH!). My question is with 17,xxx on the clock it shouldn't be too worn, but is it possible to jump the engine (starter is still in) and compression test it after it's out of the frame?

Secondly, as long as I put oil in it, would it be okay to compression test it without the clutch and basket in? (worse comes to worst I put it back in the frame and connect it up to do so).

you should be able to get an ok read using a air ratchet the way it sits. but i would be shocked if you got a bad read with only 17k, why do you think it had bad compression?

just read your other post. honestly your motor should be in pretty good shape, and wont need much if anything, but if you want to rip it down have fun.
i would get a gearbox and slap it in then move on to the other things you listed.
