What is the strangest thing you've eaten?
Being vietnamese I've eaten my fair share of odd things... cow tongue, some duck in a blood sauce, etc. What about you?

Weirdest thing I've eaten was octopus at my favorite local sushi bar. It was good and I have had it on several occasions.

I lived in the Philippines for two years and tried dog once. I never could gather the stomach to try Bullut.

Rattlesnake. It was delicious.
I also ate Korean Kimchi...my friend tried it and almost lost his lunch. I guess it is an acquired taste. I thought it wasn't all that bad.

I'm also Vietnamese so tried lots of "weird" things. Congealed goose blood, pig ears, balut (baby duck eggs; and it's good!), dog, rabbit, snakes/eels, frogs, raw pig, etc. Surprisingly, I'm pescatarian now.
Isn't kim chee just spicy pickled cabbage? |

I'd say it's tied with chocolate covered crickets and larva, deep fried cow large intestines, and snake venom in alcohol.
Cant really decide which is more unusual. |

Something that ended up in my mouth/throat while riding, couldn't spit it out. I was just thankful for no stinger.

Spent 15 months in Vietnam and ate nothing but Vietnameese food the entire time--our small unit went "native". I loved the food. I still use fish sauce to spice things up. I much prefer Asian food to anything else. In retrospect, I probably should have married an Asian woman--my French-Canadian wife of 25 years, is not into Asian food. We are blessed with a great Thai restaurant in town and I can usually be found there at lunchtime with my friends. It's a good compromise. When I visit relatives in Central New York, I get a chance to visit some great Vietnameese restaurants--a real treat.

I have a thing for banana with cheddar cheese (cut offa block of cheese). Strangely, banana alone upsets my stomach.
I opened my mouth on the front of the Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags Over Georgia (roller coaster) and felts a crack/pop on my top row of teeth with an instant bitter taste in my mouth and little bits sprayed directly into the very back of my throat. I think it was a June Bug or Japanese Rose Beetle. |

I was at the head table of a big banquet once, where we had personal servers. They would wait until the entire table was done with one course before they brought the next out for everyone. So you had to eat. It was so bad, I was relieved - RELIEVED - when they brought out the sauteed snail course. (As an aside, I am a dedicated meat eater. But is it too much to ask to have the muscle part only. Nothing from the head, nothing from the feet, nothing that used to have feces or urine in it, etc. Is it too much to ask?)

That sea cucumber looks like the worms from "Dune".

Rattlesnake is unbelievably rich. I thought it had a lot of the same texture as Lobster, but a sweeter taste.

I was at a Greek friend's house maybe 25 years ago for a backyard barbecue where they had a goat on a spit over the coals. After it was done and people started eating, I went inside to the kitchen to get a drink and saw his father sitting at the kitchen table with the goat's head on a platter in front of him. Next, he took a spoon, plucked out the goat's eyes from the head, and ate them, going yummmmm. Needless to say, I ran out of the kitchen.
BTW - those century eggs are not really 100 years old, that's just what they are called. Compared to other things over there, like a bottle of wine with either mice or snakes in them, those eggs look good, I don't think you want to drink those wines. |
