Dude, put some kind of warning in the title like "warning: actual death on camera".
And now I'm paranoid that something like that will happen to me, so I'm never going to lanesplit, ever.

OMG i want to slice my veins open because i did not see a warning on the thread title because now my life is ruined.
lol. I'm sure 100% of the people that complained here would have watch the whole video even if there was some kind of warning. |

Way to assume. I've already seen some dude with his guts spilled out on the street recently and I don't feel like seeing it again if I can avoid it.

What are you guys complaining about? Give Cuong a friggin' break. Yes somebody died here and that's terrible but we all knew that motorcycling is dangerous when we started, didn't we?
This video has about as much gore and violence as a Disney move, you can't even see the damage to the rider.

I didn't actually see him die or dead, so I assume he could possibly be alive... But pretty sore. I've seen people get blown up amongst other things, deformed as they may be some lived.

All the people complaining - I don't blame you, but you should have known before you even got your license that this guy could be you on any given day. It's something riders have to accept in my opinion.

Thanks for posting this. I live in Realville. The reality is that, or something frighteningly close to that, could happen to me. Makes me double down on paying attention and being present when I ride. Sad. But instructive.
Who knows, if a handful of people see this and ride safer or take an MSF course or do a track day they wouldn't have otherwise, etc, this guy's unfortunate death could result in a life being saved. As a pilot I have seen at least one video of a horrible aviation incidents/accidents that were not distributed publicly. The FAA reasoned (I think correctly) that if pilots saw the consequences of pilot error that that might change cockpit behavior for the better. Just my opinion, of course. And we all know what that's worth. |

Doesn't look like a lane split attempt to me. Just a noob making a mistake. And I don't see anything graphic about the vid.

I was snappier than I should have been last night. Sorry Cuong.
Regarding the actual incident in the video, the rider really should have slowed down earlier if he wasn't going to continue splitting. That black car's brake lights were already on before the rider's approach and it didn't swerve into his path either. The whole thing could have been easily avoided. Rider had enough clearance on the right to split between the truck and the black car but didn't use it, braked way too late because he wanted to split then chickened out once he had committed in speed but not in position. After running through this scenario in my head all morning and compared it to how I deal with traffic I can't imagine making the same decision as he did in that video in the same situation. |

I agree, seeing the reality of this passion of us makes most more alert, as it should. This poor rider just rear-ended that car for no reason (note the right leg extending trying to save a mental right fall if swerving right). Whatever happened after that point is irrelevant (for our analysis, not for him). Too fast for conditions, not enough aware of all the pieces in the game (relative positions, directions and speeds), fearful of evasive maneuver. Three combined riding mistakes led him to meet eternity, just like that. Here is the reason for getting educated and proficient in street riding and bike's capabilities, as completely and quickly as possible before diving into that jungle: otherwise, stick to track days. Bonus point: Double tires of big trucks are a magnet for us, ........stay away from those, always !!!

Just gonna throw this out there, maybe that's why lane splitting is illegal?
Many dumb things you can do on a bike, I think this is one of the dumbest. You're already more vulnerable on the road, now let's squeeze between unsuspecting cars. Yay I cringed more watching cyst videos , if you thought this was bad, YouTube a cyst video....

He also wasn't splitting when he went down. In fact he did the opposite of splitting. If he had continued to split he would've lasted longer.

Well keep lane splitting then. Isn't my life that's in harms way. My car might get damaged, you get hurt, a ticket , and thread in the crash section.
Nothing illegal or unsafe about walking down a sidewalk. They are there for a reason. Same reason why there are designated lanes for traffic. I don't like when cars try to share my lane so why would I do the same ? If someone jumps a curb, hits me and I survive , then I'm still not at fault. I get a nice pay out and go on my merry way

as a NY resident, i realize you have no idea what it's like to lane split. so i'll table the fact that you also have no idea the hazards related to it, or the hazards it relieves. but i agree completely with what you say in this post. you are responsible for your own safety. i personally find safety in control. and being able to control who is around me and leave dangerous situations quickly is what i prefer to do to keep safe. if you think people see or hear you or have any intention of being informed about what is around them when you're on a bike, you're ignorant. if you think staying in your lane and being a safe defensive driver is enough to keep some ****ing retard from trying to slam into you without warning, you're ignorant. is lane splitting at 45+over traffic dangerous? obviously. is controlling who you have around you, and being able to quickly escape dangerous situations causing me more danger? here's the problem with you 49-staters who constantly bitch about splitting being unsafe... it's only unsafe because of the asshole drivers in 49-states who think it is their job to block you because you are cheating in line, or because they believe "SPLITTING IS UNSAFE!" so they try to prevent it. everywhere else, where people are sane about lane splitting, that is not an issue. splitting puts you the rider in control of your surroundings. sitting in line with a bunch of cars puts them in control of not hitting you.

Yes exactly. There are safe times where I can pull off a lane spilt but I don't trust the drivers. They DO act like its thier job to block you or tail you or retaliate because you "jumped the line"
