cam chain tensioner question

Noticed a clicking sound awhile back and thru various forums determined my cct was loose/out of whack. A thread on a 636 forum desribed loosening the cct 2-3mm from the engine case to get it to click to the next level and tighten the tensioner up thus eliminating the clicking sound. I originally did this and the click went away only to come back after a few minutes. Like an I just got done loosening the cct like 10mm. Well the click is gone cause me thinks the cct is way too tight now. Question of the day - Is there a way to reset the cct, i.e. the middle bolt on the unit?
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that once the cct was loosened, it was tightened back up again.

Just take it out .You can push it all the way back in place. I cant remember how but it is no big deal. You can also get a mechanical one from APE . http://www.orientexpress.com/Kawasak...Ninja/Top+End/

Small flat blade screw driver in the middle where the 10 mm bolt goes, you can use the screw driver to hold the tensioner out while you tighten the 8mm bolts

I presume you found this thread

I'm a bit dubious on the wisdom of essentially forcing the cam chain tighter than factory. Curious to hear how long the cam sprockets and chain on the 636 forum are lasting after doing this.

It's not really forcing the cam chain tensioner tighter for the 636 guys. The 636 tensioner is kinda like a ratcheting mechanism, which is why in their dyi fixxit they would loosen the tensioner until it clicks to the next level. The 250 tensioner is a straight spring loaded plunger. The 636 guys are "essentially forcing the tensioner to the next position because either it's stuck or the chain has not become loose enough for the spring to click it to the next level. I did what Plasmatoast said to do and it's all better. No more kawi-click and the bike starts so much quicker now. It's possible the tensioner was binding but who knows.

Actually, it's a common enough thing with the 636/ZX6 line that it's been done for a llllooooooonnnnnnggggg time as a shade tree mechanic fix, and the motors essentially last forever. If anything, something else get's 'em way before any issues with the cam chain or valves develop.

The key is ONE CLICK, and ONE CLICK ONLY at a time.

OE sell's them for 59.95, yet you go direct to APE and there 51.65

Thanks!

It's simple. Just take out your stock tensioner and put in your ape then hand turn/tighten the APE bolt, you'll feel it with the pressure from the chain...then back it out 1/4 turn. Turn on the engine and listen for noise..if there's noice, turn off engine and tighten it up some more..just a little bit at a time....until no more noise..then may be back out just a little bit to be on safe side (better loose than too tight). Everything is good then tighten up the lock nut..may want to use some locktite (blue).

resurrecting this old thread with a question

my cct failed last weekend on my 300, does anyone know if the APE 250 manual cct will work on the 300 or if there is a difference between the cct's in the 250s and 300s

It looks like the 300 has its own part number for the CCT (http://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/p/k...tensioner-assy), but I couldn't tell you how it's actually different. There seem to be past Kawasakis that used the same CCT which had different part numbers simply for different finishes, so it could definitely be compatible despite a different number.
