Cam Chain Tensioner Replacement

So my little ninja has been making lots of noise lately. After poking around online, I am pretty sure its the cam chain tensioner. OEM CCTs are 50-60 dollars and APE ones are similar....I thinking if it was simple it would be much cheaper and faster for me to replace it myself.

It seems like minimal work to get to the CCT as I can see it through the right side faring. Is the CCT something I could replace myself? Is it as easy as taking off the screws (circled in red in the picture) and putting in a new one??

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Grace

Taking out those two bolts is it. I had noise coming fron my cct and found that resetting it made the noise go away but you don't have to remove the unit to reset it.

Yes, all you need is to remove the right hand fairing and undo the two 8mm bolts on either side to remove the CCT.

Reinstalling it is a different animal because you have to reset it, and it is a to reset if you aren't blessed with a lot of strength. You need to do the following.

1. Remove the 10mm cap bolt in the middle.
2. Put the end that goes into the engine on a rubber mat on the floor. Take a flat-blade screwdriver and insert it into the place where the cap bolt went.
3. Turn the screwdriver clockwise while pushing down on the CCT. Keep turning while putting your weight on the CCT and make sure the housing doesn't rotate.
4. Once the end is fully retracted, take out the screwdriver, and put in an X-acto blade (just the blade part, not the handle) to hold the piston in.
5. Put the CCT back in, with the X-acto knife blade in the cap bolt hole, with a new gasket and tighten the 8mm bolts to 87 in/lbs.
6. Take out the X-acto knife blade. The piston should release and go into the engine.
7. Put the 10mm cap bolt back on and tighten to 87 in/lbs.

(Yes, I am aware that VeX showed a different method where you can do this. However, his method requires a great amount of hand and upper body strength and/or multiple people. You can see his method as part of his valve check DIY here.)

One last thing. The Service Manual says you need to replace the gasket as well if you remove and reinstall the CCT. (That's part 11061 on the diagram.) You probably should do it as cheap insurance.

Thanks for the quick response and advice!

I will order that gasket before I start pulling things apart...
