Removing Rear Shock Spring?

Hi guys! This might be a dumb question, but is it possible to separate the spring from the damper on the rear shock? I'd like to pull out the spring to paint, but I don't want to disassemble my rear suspension if it's not possible.

You bet, but you'll need a spring compressor. Take the shock off the bike, compress the spring with the compressor, loosen the lock nut that locks the clevis to the shock rod then take the clevis off, loosen the spring compressor and whal-a it's off.

That is not possible for the pre-gen Ninjas. (Incorrect information. Please, see post #18 below)

Very true, I just preferred the options of changing the shock oil, and adjustable air suspension so to speak that the ZX600 shock offered.

I put 15wt synthetic and adjustable air is a nice touch when riding 2 up sometimes.

On my EX500 I resprung the OEM shock with one from PRO SPRING, 500lbs spring very nice, easy and inexpensive modification.

Anything can be done, the question is, is it worth it?

Personally if you want to paint the spring, I would work some cloth inside the spring, and paint away.

I took mine off to put some spacers on to preload the spring.

No, no; I meant that I could understand your previous post.

I don't know what "the lock nut that locks the clevis to the shock rod" is.

Could you post some pictures of those?

Thanks!

I believe that my whole shock absorber was welded; but I have been wrong many times before.

It is great that it can be disassembled, so a dust boot can be added to protect the shaft.

pics of removing clevis, jam nut is under the rubber bottoming cushion. Jam nut is 17mm. My "spring compressor" is a big bearing puller.

Excellent !!!

Thank you very much, Roger; I stand corrected.

Have you done it just for painting the spring, or for servicing the hydraulic absorber as well?

I did it so I could put a 1/2" to 3/4 inch spacer under the spring to preload it and get the sag with rider closer to where I wanted it, which raised the rear, the shock it's self is a sealed unit I believe. (but I didn't really look)

Thank you! That's really helpful. I ordered a spare shock from eBay to play with - hopefully it'll be here later this week and I can give this a shot. I'll report back with results!

I just wanted to confirm what Ghostt said. The PreGen's spring is heavier than the one that comes on the 500, so I swapped it. I used a homemade spring compressor consisting of a couple ratchet straps (Redneck Engineering - Do Not Try This At Home!). Once you compress the spring, you just loosen the locknut and clevis from the shaft, then the spring will fall right off.

The 500's preload adjuster lets you release all tension from the spring, so you don't need a spring compressor. Here is the process for swapping the spring on the 500's shock, which should be about the same other than needing a spring compressor rather than just loosening the preload adjuster.

Also note that the PreGen's top spring perch is held on the shock body with a circlip. I haven't tried it with the spring still installed, but you may be able to simply pop the circlip off once the spring is compressed. That would allow the perch to move up and relieve the spring pressure, which would then give you easy access to the nut at the bottom.

The NewGen/300 shock has a notched lower plate that just slides in and out once you relieve the spring pressure.
