Post whining sound

hey guys when my bike is sitting or even when im riding, the fuel tank makes a whining sound. Im wondering what this is, and furthermore how I would stop it.

It's fuel vapor expanding in your tank and escaping through the vent. It's not harmful or unusual. It's pretty standard on a number of Kawasaki models, including the 250. Many find it endearing. If it annoys you, ya can stop it in several ways:
1) move to where it's fairly cold year 'round
2) open the gas cap frequently
3) bore out the vent holes in the gas cap (there's a DIY on the 'net somewhere)

Turn it into a positive.

4) Pretend it's the sound of the flux capacitor charging.
5) Sing along.
6) Use it to intimidate bystanders. "What is it?" "Pulse laser. Don't worry, these things almost never blow up."

If you hit 85mph while it's whistling, it turns your new gen into a pre-gen.

Yes, this is true.... but the parts are always on back-order. I ordered mine wayyyy back in 1985, and it just arrived.

The fuel tank whine was the very first mod I did to the 2 Ninja's, I found it that annoying...

http://www.kawiforums.com/ninja-250r...-pictures.html

It worked completely on the Red but the Black still has the occasional 'moan', I'm going to replace both fuel caps with SSR fuel caps...

When the whining stops check and see if the passenger fell off.

I kept it, I like the way she talks to me. Stopped at a overlook once on Topanga (sp) canyon road, walked away and she started whining. Came back, patted her on the tank, said I will be right back and she stopped. She was missing me.

Anyone know if the key-less race cap fixes this as well?

Ours sounds like one of those rubber chickens when lightly squeezed. So, we nicknamed her Ninja "Super Chicken"

It's great for keeping people away from your bike when it's parked in the sun. They think it's a bike alarm going off.

I should have the billet race cap on next week. I'll report back if that takes care of the whining!

Yea it's a bit annoying but you know when I started up the bike after it's winter hibernation it was like the little ninja was saying "Thanks its great to be back at it". All of a sudden I liked the familiar sound.

I thought it was something my wife installed on my bike so I would always hear her whining about me buying the bike.

Received my silver and black SSR Racing Caps and installed them on Thursday, no more noise. If the gas cap mod doesn't work for you, try the SSR caps, they're very well made and look great...

Cap vented?

Is the SSR cap vented, or will it cause fueling/vacuum problems??

Don't know.

I doubt it's vented, but I ran it over a 1000 miles and no issues so far.

I'm quite sure they're vented or you wouldn't have fuel flow for long, you'd end up with a vacuum in the fuel tank. Both of my '09's have SSR caps and are not having any sort of fuel issues. The cap is designed for racing bikes so I'm sure SSR did a bit of R&D on them...

Where would it vent?
It seals to the filler neck and the cap has an oring...

Did the mod to the stock cap, now it almost never whines... it does once in a while, not regular as before and now only for a second.
