Quiet whining sound with bike off

Recently, there's a sporadic quiet whining sound that lasts maybe 3-5 seconds every few minutes coming from somewhere in the front half of my '09 250R.

This is even with the bike cold, not having been used in a few hours, and completely turned off.

I'm not able to recreate the sound. I've tried pushing on the front tire or sitting on the bike, pulling the clutch or brakes, but when the sound appears seems kinda random.

I'll be checking the tire pressure in a few days to see if it drops, but I don't know what to do if it ain't the tire.

Feedback appreciated,
Tim

Oh, that's the venting from the fuel tank. It's normal, especially in our Texas weather. Basically, pressure in the gas tank is being equalized.

About the only way you wouldn't hear it is if your tank is almost completely empty or during below-freezing temperatures.

Our 08 had the whine as well, I did the gas cap mod and it almost never does it any more, if it does it's only for a second. My buddy has a new 2010 and his does it a lot, like you said even when just sitting for days sometimes.

Oh and welcome!!

Actually, CA service techs and riders act like it's very weird because it's rare on 50-state bikes. I had a local kawi service center rep get relly confused by it on my 49-state bike.

Nope. Tank whistle.

Definitely gas tank. All Ninja 250s do this, even the ones from the 80s. Very normal.

Hahahaha mine did that this morning for the first time. It sounded like a cat meowing, I was like oh hi kitty bike!

I don't understand why people don't like it, it's so cute .... wait maybe that's why

I used to think it was "cute" too, until it started doing it all the time. Once I widened the gas cap vent hole it completely stopped.
One weird thing was that when it would whine I would also often smell gas at the same time. I think the stock vent hole is so restrictive the gas fumes are expelled under more pressure and high enough to reach your nose. Now that there's less pressure being exerted I've never again smelled gasoline fumes when on the bike.

I know this thread is quite old, but from reading the title "Quiet whining sound with bike off", I immediately thought it might be your wife/GF in the distance bitching about your riding??? Maybe your wife complaining about your GF? dunno!
