Torque wrench
I have a torque wrench from Harbor Tools and when using it to loosen a bolt, it gave on me a couple of times. That is, the resistance from the wrench was not strong enough to loosen the bolt so it ended up moving past the lock point... a similar feeling to stripping a screw. Anyway, it still works but am curious if it is now mis-calibrated and that if I should get a new one? Thoughts?

I don't think you're supposed to use torque wrenches to loosen bolts. Only to torque them down.

Use a breaker bar to loosen. It's long like a torque wrench but solid like a normal one and usually includes a nice comfy grip.

Oh definitely, if the torque wrench was used o loosen a bolt, it's probably badly damaged now. Take it in the shop for recalibration and verification.
Torque wrench are precision tools. They should not be used for any thing other that their purpose, to tighten a bolt at a specific value. |

Use the 20% off coupon from this link and go get yourself a proper breaker bar.
There's also a coupon for a 1/2" torque wrench in case you damaged yours by using it to loosen. http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/...e=magurl1.html Last futzed with by Ramen; March 12th, 2010 at 07:55 PM. |
