BSA is Back! Mahindra Announces Return of Storied British Marque

Indian Automotive giant Mahindra signed an exclusive licensing arrangement through its subsidiary, Classic Legends Private Limited,*to build new BSA and Jawa motorcycles.

The recent acquisition of Yezdi, formerly manufactured by Ideal Jawa under license from Jawa Moto of the Czech Republic, provides Mahindra a marque that was popular in India from the Sixties into the Nineties. Pawan Goenka, Mahindra Automotive Business Managing Director, reported the company’s intention to soon move from the commuter segment to high-end premium bikes in India, and has launched an official Yezdi India website. The Yezdi is expected to be based on the single-cylinder Jawa 350. Production timelines haven’t been announced, but industry observers speculate that prototypes will likely appear at the Delhi Auto Expo next year.

“We are changing strategy as far as the two-wheeler business is concerned,” Goenka said. “We are moving away from the commuter segment to high-end premium bikes and we are working on bikes based on BSA and Yezdi brands.”

While no specifics were forthcoming on the timetable for the new BSA either, the design renderings by Tamas Jakus of Jakusa Design show an interesting blend of traditional and contemporary forms. The model in the foreground carries a few old-style British forms in the tank and headlight, while the other design exhibits the sharp edges of modern roadsters. Both appear to be powered by vertical twins in a twin tube perimeter chassis with inverted fork and box-section monoshock swingarm. The illustrations share the same single-disc front end and radiator, differing in bodywork, exhaust systems and seats.

While the Yezdi is expected to be an India-only model, it seems likely that Mahindra will engineer the BSA to meet Euro 4 specifications and plan to market the bike in other countries. All of this*remains speculation at the moment, but we will surely keep you posted.
