NEVER EVER clean carbs with safety wire!

Bought a used junker "race bike". I knew it would need lots of TLC to make it my spec track worthy and it did not disappoint. However, I could never get it to run right and dyno showed the same. Adjusting idle mix screws did nothing, changing pilots did nothing and finally I found out why. Complete and total tear down, inspection and a little bit of bore scope revealed a piece of safety wire stuck in a carb passage. Ya'll wanna know why it's preached to never use wire to clean a carb, here's your WHY.

Pics of a clean port vs the offender that explains all the issues I was having. Thanks to Ducatiman for selling me a set of carbs that I know will be spotless, trouble free and all I need to add are my race jets and go!

Undeniable.
Alternative, various methods DO exist to safely, properly clear twisting, winding hidden circuits/ports without leaving ummm, remnants behind.

LOL that's ODD.... because I've used wire to clean passages in carbs for years
and NEVER got a piece stuck in there like that ! you gott'a be gentile when cleaning a carb, not brake out the hammer and pound it in there till it stops !
Now days I use tiny little brushes that I found for carb cleaning their stronger than wire and better all around...
but I bet if you tried real hard you could brake off a chunk of one of those brushes too....
it just goes to show ya that some people should not attempt to clean carburetors ! it takes attention to detail, finesse and carefulness ! not to Hurt the carbs !
....
Bob.....

Safety wire's tough sh*t!!! There's no way it could've broken off inside carb. It was poked in too far and slipped in. Then wasn't or couldn't be retrieved, so they just left it!!! EEEeeeediots!!!

As mentioned many times before, carbs aren't "easy". If you can't do full refurb and restoration back to factory-fresh clean condition, send it to ducatiman who can.

I'm going to disagree here. Safety wire only bends so many times before it breaks. Get it too jammed and it will also break, depending especially on the diameter.

The reason I say this is that the wire is in the passage from the head side (A/F screw side) to the pilot jet. The ONLY way for the wire to get in there is to have it shoved through the air jet in the carb mouth across the jet opening OR to shove it up the jet and have it bend over and head that way and then break. In other words, Ducatiman is a better and more patient man than I for taking them in trade to fix them by drilling out a plug and fishing it out.

In other news, hot diggity these carbs from DucatiMan are gorgeous! Even "special Edition" with some powder coated parts. Back in business!

True, the harder the wire the easier it is to brake....
I'm glad Ducattiman got you all fixed up !
when I use wire to clean out passageways in carbs I try to use the wire of the right size.... several times smaller than the hole because if it's too tight a fit you will get it stuck in there ! .... I remember cleaning out a 450cc honda carb one time and all I could find was chicken wire... so I used a chunk of it....
sure enough it was a tight fit and it got stuck and stuck good..but I could barely wiggle it and after about an hour I finally got it back out....
then it hit me like a ton of bricks "torch tip cleaners" there are a varity of sizes
and their strong... BUT they have file like edges and can ream things out if you get too carried away.... I've used them to increase Main jet size a few times and they work fairly well for that...
the smallest wire you'll need is in the emulsifier tubes below the main jet
those are usually dirty and need poked out the 2nd to the smallest torch tip cleaner is perfect for that in my tool box .... better in fact than the brushes I bought on line for carb cleaning..... Oxy/Acetylene torch tip cleaners are not that expensive and I have been using them for decades to clean carbs
( when I can find the bloody things)... I think I have 3 sets of them now
...one of the tools I won't be without ! I haven't had a torch set in many a year now due to the Ranch fire but I still have my torch tip cleaners they were spared the fire! ...
....

Not a single piece of wire nor torch tip cleaner (which I have plenty of) was used to restore this 32 year old carb to glory 8 years ago. It's still in use today on a very special machine. There are tools for every job. Use the right tools!

Lots of threads here on cleaning carbs.
Do search for "clean carbs ducatiman".

Yes to soft copper wire, no to hard wires of any kind.
