Propylene Glycol

Any downsides to replacing my coolant with propylene glycol (after flushing)? I'm a fan of non-toxic stuff and would like to get rid of the ethylene glycol that comes stock.

Considering i'm vaporizing propylene glycol and inhaling it right now, something tells me it doesn't do as well as ethylene glycol in terms of heat.

Congrats mratom, you're breathing coolant. It's just as bad, if not worse for you than traditional tobacco because it's unregulated and you have not idea what's in it.

It does just fine as coolant. I assume we're talking about Engine Ice here? Works great. I've run that for track days since regular green coolant isn't allowed, and I'm not about to run straight water since my bike does experience near freezing temps in our unheated garage.

The boiling points of ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (PG) are both right around 370°F, so that's not an issue. I'd get off the stuff though, yeah it's food safe, for whatever that's worth, but it's used as deicing fluid on airplanes, and, of course, as engine coolant. A little bit won't hurt you, but repeated ingestion would worry me. Bees love it... I wonder if that's causing our bee problems? Probably not...

PG has a higher freezing point, which won't matter where I'm at, but it also has a lower heat transfer and higher viscosity. Those are the two properties I'm wondering about, do they really matter?

Seems OK since chone is using it.

Can't tell you much about its claims of working better than green coolant, but I know it works just fine. Get the half gallon container and you'll be just fine for the whole system with some to spare.

I prefer ethylene glycol. Not environmentally friendly, though.

In these parts, many of us use tap water for radiators and batteries.
Bummer about other parts of the world.

fwiw it does make formaldehyde if you're one of those .0000001 ohm people who cook the living **** out of your juice, but even then it only makes the same amount of formaldehyde as a normal cigarette, and formaldehyde is only one of several carcinogens, so even then it's better.

Just cause e juice has that prop 65 California warning saying nicotine causes cancer doesn't mean it causes cancer. Look it up, yo. I mean, no matter anyway. I'm making the switch to 0mg juice with my next bottle. Should be off the stuff soon enough :-)

Nah. You're still breathing coolant like a goof. I know tons of guys who smoke and I've spent plenty of time in the smoke shack for news updates/social time, which means I've gotten more than my share of nicotine buzz and second hand smoke in the last year. I still think it's a terrible habit.

So no, no I won't get off my horse. It's comfortable and has a great view.
