Oil on brake pads?

My bike was squeaking and I drop some oil on the axel bolts ever few weeks and it works. Only today I think I may have gotten some on the pads or it splashed up or something. Brakes were fine then after adding oil I went out for a ride and I can still stop, but the front brake definitely doesn't "bite" a hard as it used to. Is it true I have to get new pads for the front?

Also can anyone quote me a price for pads and installation so I have an ide of what to expect.

Spray a metric ****-ton of brake cleaner / carb cleaner all over the pads, the disc and the caliper and work it with an old toothbrush all over the disc and as much of the pads and caliper you can get to, wash with soapy water, repeat.

They will then need to bed the compound back onto the disc, they should squeek a bit and shudder but once the material is back on the disc it should be good.

It's an easy enough job.
  • Losen the retaining pins
  • Remove the caliper
  • remove the retaining pins
  • remove the brake pads
  • clean the pistons with brake cleaner & apply red rubber grease to the sides, push them back in. (a G clamp & piece of wood may be useful for this)
  • apply copper grease to the backs of the pads
  • place the 1st pad back into the caliper (behind the retaining tab on the spring)
  • put copper grease on the threads of the pin & put it through the c shaped hole in the pad (you may have to press the pad down, there is a spring beneath the pads)
  • Place the 2nd pad in & screw in the pin. 17.2Nm
  • Replace the caliper 25Nm
Brake pads EBC FA197HH ~$33 (quick look on Amazon, you may find cheaper elsewhere, I'm 5000 miles away from AZ)
Brake cleaner ~$10
copper grease A few $
red rubber grease A few $
