change pilot jet?

I have a pretty specific minor problem that I want to check opinions on before I consider changing the pilot jet.

When the bike is cool it barely idles at about 1000 rpm and when it gets good and hot, like after a freeway ride, it idles at 2500+ rpm. It can be low idling for up to 20 minutes of riding, like I have to blip it to keep it going. I have area p, pods, factory pro 112 main, stock float height, stock pilot, and the mixture screws out 4 and 1/2 turns. I am at sea level. Hangs just a little on blip...not enought to annoy. Runs great under all other conditions.

The factory pro people say there is up to 5 turns of mixture adjustment.

Still seems like this might be a lean idle condition. Any other opinions?

try lowering it to the 4th position (richer) and see if that helps. there is some interaction between the pilot circuit and the needle position, so that might help the lean condition you seem to have.

check for air leaks... vacuum hoses loose, carb boot clamps tightened...

last, idle speed (I use 1500 rpm) should be set only after the bike is completely warmed up after 10-15 minutes of riding.

For cold starts, you need to use the choke to keep the RPMs up. Mine usually will start at 3000rpm with the choke on and I gradually decrease the choke lever input as the bike warms, until it can idle on it's own.

Ok. Simple enough to try to raise needle. Maybe I just need to get used to cold blooded nature of this bike. I have been spoiled by FI on all the other bikes!

Darned if it doesn't idle perfectly when the temp gets over 75!!!
I may install #40 pilot anyway so I have more headroom on my mixture screws when I ride in the cold seasons. As I understand it from the great kkim picture above, I should be able to install bigger pilots and back off on my mixture screws so they are not over 4.5 turns out.

yes, large temp swings can greatly affect the pilot system.

the general rule is if you need to back out the mixture screw more than 3-4 turns, change to the next larger pilot jet and start over. That should put you about 2-3 turns out.

every bike's needs are different and if the 40 works for you, great!

you'll find jetting nirvana soon.

Talking Jetting

Finally put enough mileage on the bike with the new 40 pilot to pronounce it good. Idle stable. No choke after 3-4 minutes. I think I finally have the correct setup for my bike and location.

I have area p pipe and k&n pods at sea level in Cape Cod MA

Factory Pro 112 main, 40 pilot, needle clip 3rd from top, 2 turns out on both mixture screws.

50-55 mpg while riding full throttle as often as possible!

Thanks to all for help
