I am watching this thread carefully - with the 5-8k distances I see for most tires I'm really going to run up costs on my weekend drives between LA and Vegas; I'm still on my OEM tires right now, but am looking for something that won't break my wallet. I'd love something sticky for the canyons but destroying those by going 600 miles every weekend in a straight line seems like a waste.

I managed to squeeze out 7k with the BT-16 rear. and about 10k for the front. The new S20s seems to have a slightly softer compound as I'm getting about 6k out of it. my new BT-45s should be coming in soon so I'm hoping I can get more than 7k at least.

I agree, have you considered one of the long mileage tires like the metzeler marathon?

No, but I just pulled those up on superstore -- the closest size I see is 140x80 and IIRC my 250's rear is 130x70... will that work? (ignorance apologies, have barely looked at tires so far)

140 80s should fit the rear no prob, but it is a much taller tire than stock and will lower rpms on the highway. Id run it through gearing commander and see if you would be happy with the result.

I like the black rubber ones.

Seriously, the variance in tires is much less than the variance in rider perception & reaction, especially for commuters.

I think it will with no problem...but run it thru gearing commander to see if youll be happy with the rpm change. The taller tire will lower your rpms a bit at road speed.

Update....contacted metzeler directly and they do not recommend the 140/80 17 for the ninja, they also did not say why nor did he offer a better choice. Harumph! :-)

If you are referring to to maybe sliding the fender up by using slotted bolt holes on the fender, that may be possible, but there is the fork brace/ fender mount to contend with. You may need longer bolts to secure the fender at the top. I have about 1 cm of clearance between the tire and fender and about 2 cm between the tire and the brace.

On the profile side... the front may be a little narrower with some brands. Depending on the tire, the extra height may be just a tad taller than my 120 and it may not do much as far as correcting the speedo error. Maybe a .1 -.3 mph correction at the most

Question commuter tires

Can you all suggest some decent cheap tires that are good for commuting, ones that are at least better than the stock irc? how are the Dunlop?

If you don't mind going up a size in the rear, the bt023 should be good..I think the rear is 140.

I just got a set on my CBR and they're amazing, I commute 100 miles round-trip to school and back.

Would love to have the bt-023's but they are out of my price range.

Check out Shinko. Their tires get many good reviews. I'm more than happy with the 712 rear on my pre gen.
