Damn Kickstand...

Went to the movies tonight. On my ride home on the freeway, I started to hear a slight "tink... tink tink"... "that's odd," I thought. looked around for a sec, with nothing obviously dragging or gone but I'm slightly paranoid about the bike, so I got off at the immediate exit. As I pulled up to the light, she dies! "WHAT THE ****?" I thought, immediately realizing my kickstand was down. "SON OF A" went through my mind when I realized I had lost my kickstand spring and my kickstand was now (and had been!) dragging on the ground. Thank my lucky stars that something bad didn't happen. but I was forced to pull the bike on the side walk, and make some road-side repairs using zipties.

moral of the story: don't leave home without zipties and ducttape

as a side note- I believe this was caused by the adjustment of my rear-sets, which caused my boot to get too close to the kickstand spring, knocking it off. (I assume... I don't actually know precisely what caused it to come off... but this seems like the most likely [read: only] possibility.

I had the same thing happen. The spring on my 2008 did appear a little wimpy and was on my to-do list to look into. After just a couple rides it fell off.

I replaced it with a spring I had from an old-gen bike. It works fine now.

If the kickstand doesn't get to the fully-deployed position it may not activate the killswitch. The button is untouched once the kickstand gets past 90* and the spring tension pulls it up to the undeployed position.

O jeebus, I need to restock my ziptie stash. Thanks for the reminder.

I always try to carry bungy straps but will now add zipties to the list. Thanks for the idea and glad everything came out ok.

After having problems with the screw that hold the piece from the switch to the kickstand while changing my kickstand twice, i just broke it and zipped tied it on the on position. Much easier than bypassing the switch.

So I've replaced the missing spring, and my kickstand (and bike) are back in commission. Two new springs from home depot, interlaced and crimped on both ends. highly doubt it's coming off again.
