Barcelona MotoGP Saturday Subscriber Notes: Why Did Three Riders Crash Out Of The Lead, And The Goldilocks Approach To Winning

There are some races where you feel that nobody wants to win. The sprint race in Barcelona was such a race. The lead swapped hands a number of times, with some thrilling overtakes, but also because three different riders crashed out of the lead. In the end, like the fable of the tortoise and the hare, the rider who stayed focused and ran the pace they were comfortable at prevailed. Partly by staying committed, but especially by staying upright. As the old racing adage has it, to finish first, first you must finish.

It was clear from yesterday that a weight had been lifted from Aleix Espargaro's shoulders with the announcement that he is retiring at the end of the season. That sense of calm - not a phrase commonly used around Aleix Espargaro, nor his brother Pol for that matter - paid dividends in the sprint.
