New to me 1989 Ninja 250.

just bought my first bike yesterday and am trying to get in all together to ride.

I have some questions that hopefully you guys can answer.

1. The key is broken off in the ingition. I got the helmet lock off and gave to code to a locksmith but no dice. both the lock smith and the kawi dealer said I need to take off the ingniton module. correct? Or is there another way?

2. Any tips how to get the carb out to clean it? It's an 89 with 2500 miles on it, willing to bet those need some love. haha.

Thanks for any help!

Sorry to derail, but how the hell did you get a 1989 250r with 2,500 miles? That's crazy lol.

Anyways, I got a friend selling a bike just like yours. I'm not sure how much click he has. I wonder how much it's worth.

1.) LoL I had the same problem. While I was buying my bike, the owner broke the key off in the rust gas cap.

I tried giving the kawi dealer ship the key code but when it came in, it was the wrong key.

but my dealership was able to make a replacement on-site, by holding the broken piece of my key with pliers and inserting it into to key duplicating machine for free...

Brings back memories of my 1990 Ninja 250. I bought mine back then for $1350 and sold it for $1,950 2 months later =)

How much do you have into the bike? Cause with a new ignition, possible tank rust and carb parts needed...you could be in for a lot of work and $300+ in parts or more. Not to mention a few days in the garage sniffing old gas fumes.

I did just buy a non-running 2005 model and did a carb clean, POR15 cycle tank repair kit off Amazon, and it needed some misc carb parts and a new petcock...oh, and a battery. Total of $180 in parts.

I found the bike for 600 bucks, the way you see it. I got the carbs all apart and

cleaned out, passage ways were clogged with sticky old gas. No biggie, got the

carb almost back into the bike, just having a little trouble getting the airbox to

seat up with the carb.

My real problem is the key, or how to get a new one. The piece of key is broken off pretty far into the cylinder. Is it a major PITA to get the ignition cylinder out?

Get some really fine music wire from a hobby shop, bend a little "j" in the end of it, and see if you can fish the broken bit of key out. The actual key code is stamped on the bottom of the ignition lock housing, but to see it you have to pull off the fairing and I think the instrument cluster, Not that big of a deal. The key code will be in the form of Z5XXX (yes, there were only around 900 different keys).

Some info on keys that may be helpful:

It's really easy to rekey the gas, helmet, and seat locks to match the ignition lock, and since the ignition lock by far is the most expensive and hardest to replace it's generally desired to make the other locks match it.

Hi, the '89 I bought last year was missing the keys. I took off the ignition lock complete, (can be tricky, the bolts have shear-off heads to prevent tampering, though I managed to unscrew them). The dealer sent the lock off, and a week later it came back with a new set of matched keys. The helmet and tank locks were the same key.
Not too much of a problem, guess it should be as easy in the States ?

Oh, and I hope your tank is in better shape than mine, it has quite a lot of rust coming through all over .....

Probably hasn't been ridden in 20 years due to the key being broken off in it.

I tried to warm up the bike today, and ran into a couple quirks.

It starts well, but want to rev really high with full choke. After you dial the choke balk at little it will rev up and down from 1000-3000-1000-3000. I did manage to stabilize the idle and once it got to operating temp it randomly started blowing blue smoke.

Any ideas?

My 91 does the same thing, it will start and run great, but idling is another story. Takes 90% of the choke to get it started, but have to leave the choke on to keep it idling around 3-4k. After warming up its still don't idle on its own without some choke/throttle assist.

Hoping you get your's fixed and post solution so I can apply same fix to mine.

Mine will idle with no choke, it just has to warm up a little. I cleaned the carb using the FAQ before all this and am using fresh gas. would 20 years of sitting mess with the valves? just want to know why the idle is so fine sometimes and hunting the next.

the hunting sounds like it could be a vacuum leak. try tightening the carb clamps to make sure they are not loose and inspect the vacuum hoses for cracks, splits or disconnections.

air filter in good shape?

Is it really hunting? Or did you let it idle yet to full warm? Once warmed up completely with the choke off, it should hold a steady idle. But it will "hunt" or creep up necessitating that you keep dialing back the choke during the warm up sequence until fully warmed.

As far as the blue smoke...that means you're buring oil. One thing that sometimes happens if a bike sits for a long period of time is that the oil ring can get seized in the ring lands and cause blow-by of the oil into the combustion chamber. Watch you oil consumption, and maybe or hopefully if you get the bike running and through it's paces, the heat and vibration could work the potentially seized oil ring free. Keep an eye on your oil level in the mean time. You can also get blue smoke from worn valve guides or seals which would not be the case with such low mileage. But again, with so much time and possible rusting or corrosion of internal engine parts, even if a seal or guide has been worn, it may be destroyed due to weathering.

Keep us updated and best of luck!

*UPDATE*

No more blue smoke!

Bike runs well until it gets to full operating temp (about a couple runs up and down my street) then dies, took out the air filter watched the airbox when trying to start it. the hose at the bottom is filling the airbox with a dark brown mist. Changing the old oil out tomorrow and running some seafoam though for good measure. Is something sticking form sitting for so long? It has good power until it falls apart.

Thanks for any advice.

I checked using the FAQ seem to be a little over full, but very watery. The color is correct though (black). Will be changing it before I try to run it again.

oile changed, new tires, air filter and new tires. Carbs cleaned, fresh gas. Runs good, but has a dead spot (stutter) at about 6k-7.5 8k. Only when trying to accelerate normally or maintain speed. Can be cured buy dumping on the throttle, then runs awesome all the way to redline. Thinking I need to shim my carbs even though everything is stock. I drilled my plugs out and the idle mixture is set at 2.5 turns. No throttle hanging to indicate too lean.

Am I on the right track with shimming?

try 2 each, 3mm or SAE#4 washers on each needle to shim on a stock pregen.

I really like the '89 black/red color scheme. I think I saw it on '87 and '88 years too, so it must have been the standard. Are the black exhaust pipes and red rims stock? That's the way that body type was meant to look and it looks great.
