Kkim's photos on DIY's are gone

What's happening to all of Kkim's photos? You can't see them any more.
A random check this morning shows that many, if not all of them, are gone from his DIY threads.

He torched them.

There will be a rebuilding effort over time.

Didn't take long for people to miss such a tremendous asset and wealth of information. Together we can all work to restore it. Remember to take pictures as you are doing work on your bike and post them to help others.

This is very unfortunate; I miss kkim . He had such an array of knowledge that he shared with us.

Big loss for this forum.

As for the loss of the photos, it's unfortunate but completely within his rights. For most of us, kkim will be more remembered for his time as helpful member here rather than how it all ended. A loss brings an opportunity for other members to step up and fill this void.

That's unfortunate since visuals do help tremendously. Can someone list all the DIY pics we need here to help rebuild?

Alex, would you prefer we add pics to his current DIY's or to start a new thread?

I'm changing my oil and replacing spark plugs this weekend so I can take pics of those. My bike is also currently naked so if there's a list here, I can easily snap photos of any internals.

is the reason of his departure displayed in that thread? I read all of it but can't find it. Why did he leave?

What I got from that thread is that the increase of bickering and arguing in most of the threads lately, has taken away from any pleasure he got from visiting the site. Just a guess on my part. Before it was posts about what new mods are being done and fun rides, etc. Now it just seems like every thread ends in "if you're not ATGATT I hope you die in an accident" or "I see you lowsided, you're such a f**king squid".

I'd be totally down with helping rebuild the photos but even if we could provide the pictures, it would not be as streamlined as if we were to add the photos into the threads themselves.

Hate to say it but it might be necessary to either copy kkim's DIY threads and add photos (giving him credit of course) or rewrite some of the DIY's with our own photos. Also, instead of embedding it from our own personal sites, attaching the photos could ensure it stays put even if the user's personal photo archives are changed.

Here are the key threads that are missing photos, there are somewhere around 8 of them left. They deal with carb work, exhaust installs, and a few others. I agree with Brian that the pics make the most sense within the threads themselves. What I'd suggest is that if anyone is going through the same processes going forward, if they have relevant pics to share in the process, just let me know and I can insert them appropriately within the existing thread. Kkim can and will get blanket credit for creating the threads of course (his name is still attached to them), but the new pic credits will be attributed as well.

In the scheme of a board with 16,000+ threads, this should be a drop in the bucket, but a few of these threads are the highest viewed, with 40k views for the woodcraft install thread, and 20k views for the oil change DIY. Here's the list I have. I'm sure this isn't fully complete, but it should be the bulk of the ones linked from the DIY sticky and/or important other tech threads:
  1. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=9851 Zartan's Exh hanger
  2. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10239 Rim tape

I've been watching from the shadows and have noticed the same thing...but the thing is, this isn't the only forum suffering from the sudden burst of anger, outrageously large egos, and copious amounts of testosterone.

It seems to come with almost every motorcycle forum I've been an active member of. It seems that these newer people who just got their first bike think they're tough **** cause they are a badass motorcyclist and now they have the power to lash out against others if they don't follow their beliefs...it's nothing more than cyber bullying and it's getting old fast. I'm at the point where I don't even want to use forums anymore and keep my knowledge to myself because it is very rare to find anyone that pays it forward these days.

My other choice would be to make my own forum and set up a kind of point system in which community members could vote a person up or down (kind of like reputation) and if the person receives too many negative votes then a notification is sent to an admin who can choose to ban/warn/block the person with negative feedback...problem is the time and cost to run such a forum on a dedicated server is a bit high...and i just don't have those kind of resources.

The reputation systems don't work long-term. It's a very public way of discounting anyone who is new. And it's an excuse for those who have been around for awhile, and by sheer time alone, are bound to have very high reputation points. Each post here stands alone, whether you're here for the first week or have been here for years. It's the reason that once post counts hit a certain level at this site, the notations in the avatar block are normalized.

I think the tone issue is one thing that comes up from time to time, and while it is frustrating, that's not the key issue. If people are noticeably belligerent, it's very easy to tune them out (either individually via "ignore", or at a board-wide level by just bouncing or muting them). The bigger problem, that kkim felt, (I'm paraphrasing, so forgive me), is that there are more and more people online who not only truly don't know what they are talking about re: motorcycling, but they repeat it enough times here to brand-new riders in ways that can truly mislead, and are combative when they are challenged. News flash: If a rider has been doing this for less than 5 years, they're still new. If they have less than 100,000 miles, they're still new. The rider is still learning quite a bit along the way. If they're not, they're doing it wrong. It gets tiresome to try and stay positive, remain the voice of reason, and continually find new ways to get the main points across. There are many, many posters here who do a great job of just that. Kkim will unfortunately no longer be one of them.

There is no perfect system but I can see how the voting system could be abused by those that just dont like that member.

yea i noticed kelly wasn't posting anymore for a while now. he sure did help me a lot being a newb to this motorcycle world and all. his DIY guides and being responsive with questions thru PM's really did help me learn a lot. he will definitely be missed.

we need to keep working where kelly left off and continue to pay it forward!

It's not an either or, I hope to do both. If the pictures exist somewhere online, and someone tells me where they should go, it only takes moments to add the links & attachments to the threads. I'm happy to do it. It's not something we need to complete tomorrow, or this week, or this month. Over time, I hope that we can get enough back up to make it unnecessary to create brand-new DIY's for all of these. The bulk of the work is already done, and some of those threads have been shown to be particularly useful.

Thank you for the list Alex. I'll take as many pics as I can this weekend as I'm trying to get the bike started again. Definitely can do oil change, removing gas tank, Corbin seat and I believe I have pictures of my Area P Race install. I normally use photobucket, but I can upload to an album here to make it easier for you to link.

I already cleaned out my carbs, but if my bike still doesn't start and removing them again is necessary, I'll take more pics

Hi Cuong - you can use an album if you want, but photobucket would be just fine as well. What I will likely do with all of 'em is add them as attachments within the post. That way they are locked in and are guaranteed stable, for as long as this site is up.

Have you considered hosting the pictures on the server itself Alex? I'm part of an art forum where if you want to include a picture you can upload the picture to the website instead of linking it from a photo-sharing website so if the picture ever gets taken down from the website, it could still continue to exist on here. I'm not particularly aware of the logistics of such a thing or the financial implications so you may have already considered this but not included it. Just a thought

The picture albums are hosted here, and any image attachments in posts are hosted here. It's the linked images that can be hosted anywhere on the internet. I can block the <img> tags so no external images work, but that's a little drastic, and people really do get good use out of being able to quickly post <img> tags and have them work as expected. The 3 ways people can get pictures onto this site are listed in a sticky thread at the top of the pictures section.

Good call, Noche! I'll highlight yours in the sticky, and just remove the other one.

Alex-
I have many of these saved in pdf format from Kawi forums - I'm attaching them below, but feel free to remove this post... I'm torn over whether I should even share them here...

EDIT: Noche - I got all of 'em, and the pics are back where they should be for all of those you had stored.

Thanks, Kim. I don't think we can replace the original DIY's with these PDF's outright, as while they have similar content, these would belong to kawiforums. I'll leave them up here for awhile until we figure out what to do with them here. One way might be to extract just the pics to recreate what was already published.

Think google would still have them cached?

Google doesn't cache many photos. But Noche's solution was spot-on, for at least the older ones. The Corbin one has been recreated already. I'll delete the PDF's as I finish them.

What a disaster. I took those pics for granted. This really doesn't seem like the Kelly I knew. Of all the people on this board he would seem to be the one least likely to take his ball and go home. Very unsettling.

When I work on my bike I'll be sure to take pics from now on.

I am very conflicted over all this to he honest. Kelly was great in here, helped both me and Sharon numerous times, a wealth of knowledge and a willingness to help out.

To smash all that by killing the pics in the DIY's it's like a diffrent person did it, not the same Kelly that helped a lot if us out. I understand leaving for what ever reason but he had a legacy here. It's like finding out Cal Ripkin was on roids and beat his wife everyday or Joe Montana stole the other teams playbooks to win. I liked and admired Kelly, sadly he let me down.

The good news the threads wil be rebuilt i am sure next tech day I will help with pics and I am sure the guys will have a few DIY's to post up. I say we redo them entirely, new DIY's from the members.

Honestly, we don't don't know that he purposely removed them since they have IMG tags linked from Kawiforums especially since they've been up for a couple months since he left. I know with Photobucket, they remove my pics if I have no activity for 3 months.
