It doesn't look like a piston to me, but an ignition coil pulled up by a flying spark plug.

Pistons never leave the cylinder that enclose them, even if they suffer a connecting rod failure due to over-stress due to high rpms'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecting_rod

Connecting rods are known for making holes in crankcases upon failure.

To me it looks like the bike went lean off the line .
The air box is directly under the tank. The engine back fired and lifted the tank. When the tank came up it hit his arm and his glove went flying. The shock from the tank broke his arm.

Probably, but it did seem to be making a rattling noise just before. Nevertheless, in order for a piston to get out, a lot of other things have to get out of the way. Things like the head and cams. That just didn't happen. A spark plug will blow long before that happens.

Must be a Suzuki thing. Clothing flying off as the bike tries to kill you.

I remember when this was originally posted many years ago. The guy had nitrous installed. It backfired through the system & it's the ram air intake runner blowing off.
They guy lost part of his hand/arm due to that intake backfire. There used to be a much longer video that had shown much more after the fact.

So the guy's glove didn't actually come off his hand after all. Poor guy. I hope they were able to reattach it.

If I remember right...part of it did. I don't think they were able to save what removed.
If someone happens to find the missing piece of info, post it.

This [well exhaust backfire] has happened to me on my stock 250 with Dan Moto slip-on [unjetted] twice in the past summer, both cranking the bike before to leave for work in the morning. I was wearing my earplugs and helmet both times and I jumped both times [I typically am not jumpy].

The only thing is it was incredibly humid and cooler [mid 60's] those mornings.

Crazy about that guys incident though!
