signals

Hey ya'll, so this past weekend the bf and I went on a ride (me sitting on the back of the bike). We rode all the way to neptune nets by leo carillo and had some lunch. I noticed that bikers give each other signals, one that i noticed more often is tapping the helmet when there is a cop down the road. Are there any other signals you guys use?

There's lots of signals. Pointing down to the left says there is an obstacle to the left and putting your foot out to the right says there is an obstacle to the right. Opening and closing your hand tells other riders they left their signal on. There are a lot more signals for group rides. There is a list that you will get when you do the MSF course in the course booklet.

Seen those hand signals in the MSF book, thought there was a "secret" signal thingie with the actual riders. The diagram doesn't show that tapping the helmet is for cop look out. and i've seen some people use their left hand pointing to the ground as a way to say hello.

That's the "Get back in your own lane - or I'll kick the **** out of your door!," a personal favorite. =o

Actually it's how I wave to people too.

In the Army tapping your helmet can mean; I've got you covered or cover me considering how it's done... I've only noticed the wave so far.

As you noticed, you wouldn't see the tapping on the head signal in an MSF document for obvious reasons

I haven't seen anyone point (with a pointing finger) to say hello. People do the 'casual' wave. Basically as opposed to waving your hand left and right like someone standing up would do, riders put their left hand out to the side as an acknowledgement of other riders. That way the right hand can stay on the throttle and not slow you down just because you're trying to wave at someone.
