Why do you do trackdays?

So no doubt I will get faster by doing trackdays, but that isn't really the goal. Mostly I just enjoy it. Am I an outlier? A track coach told me so, but I think his perspective is skewed, since he only deals with hardcore racers or trackday riders focused on reducing lap times. Why do you go to the track?

Yes, this is a false dichotomy, but go with your gut and choose the one that best fits.

Because they're fun. They're worry-free, riding that includes no oncoming traffic, no gravel, no grass clippings, no animals crossing the road. On top of all that lovely riding bliss, you get instruction and as a nifty side effect, you get more skill for the street to deal with surprises like decreasing radius turns or any of the above listed things that plague us all on street rides.

Because it's fun to go fast and turn hard and brake hard and throw the bike around without a worry about anything external to you or the motorcycle. Everything else is just a perk.

Because it's safer than going fast on the streets and a LOT more fun. Just spent 6 hours at our local track having a blast and not having to worry about oncoming traffic, gravel, animals, people texting or cops.

Here is some video from July 4th

Fun to learn more about how to safely and effecitively control my bike in a variety of turns, how to look futher ahead and plan entry and exits to maintain a safe position while on public roads, and to know I can push it without worrying about all the normal hazards a public road has. Plus, knowing if (when) I wrecked, immediate help and attention would be (was) available so I could practice closer to my limits.

I answered the more serious answer since I do have goals of going faster

however I find it to be a lot of fun and love doing it because it's fun, it's fun to push myself and it's fun to ride like a bat out of hell. I have found myself becoming a quicker rider every time I've gone out and have been loving every minute at the track (except for a few of those painful ones, luckily the pain has passed relatively quickly each time)

It's unbelievably fun to line up on a grid of ninja 300/250s and just let it rip to go as fast as I possibly can and try my damnedest to catch and beat other riders without the annoying disappearing thing that the 600/1000s do in the straight bits

To practice for racing while being coached by A&B graders in the fast groups,
and to become a coach in the intermediate groups.

But most importantly to simply ride my motorcycles, I do not, and will not ride on the road.
*despite the nearest tracks are 3 and 6 hrs away.

Consider the population you're sampling for this poll. Yes, there are racers here, but the hardcore guys are on other forums. You might get different results if you ask at, say, the WERA forum.

It's about the pleasure of perfecting my skills for me. Not speed at all, except where it contributes to developing skills.

The question is typically overthought before people do their first track day.

Its not ego based or to prove a point,
its not racing and nothing remotely close,
Its to learn by being coached and enjoying a sports bike for what its made for.

My mind boggles when track riders waste money on every performance part in the catalogue when its just not required and wont make any difference.

But you could also argue that anyone that is a member of an online sportbike motorcycle forum and is reading the trackday section is pretty "hardcore". Plenty of motorcyclists aren't going to spend their time here.

Wondering, what percentage of trackday riders never/rarely read motorcycle forums?

Anyways, I'm feeling somewhat vindicated.

Road riding is eleventy billion times more hardcore.

I just did 400km on a brand new race bike to put some miles on it,
was the scariest riding ive done for the past 4 yrs.
I was dangerous and hopeless and couldn't wait to get off it.

Was it because you were pushing the bike like a race bike on the street, or just you think normal riding is more dangerous because of cars? or??? Yeah, just imagine a racetrack with a centerline and they're running cars in the other direction. Add in a driveway every 400 feet and some random left-turning cars, and just a normal weekend on the windy roads around here...

Because being on a 250 and beating a s1000rr around the track just brings a smile to my face! ha... but really, it does happen

I first starting riding trackdays because i wanted a new experience and a safer environment to begin to push my 600.. after a few rounds i went and bout a race 250 to start racing.. now i go for both reasons. I have a track family and racing friends that only we know what it is like to be out there. We have fun and we want to get better and push the limits.

I still ride my zx6r daily on the streets and on occassion put on the race suit and go tear up the canyons but ive found myself backing off a lot knowing that there is such a better place to be pushing it on two wheels

Im here because I wanted a cheap slow bike which is trackworthy to have fun with. If I wanted to go fast I would be on a Ducati forum!

This being the ninjette forum is definitely skewing the results.

I chose the fun answer- but recently I have been doing Trackdays to get away from the structure of racing.

I use the TD's as ways to improve my skills for racing, but have a blast doing it.

I'm not voting because I haven't done one yet, but the main reason that I want to go is to learn the limits of my bike's performance so I can be more confident on the street.

some tracks and orgs here do mock races, it really helped me get comfortable with the idea of racing with people who were running more or less the same pace as me and I did fairly well in the ones that I ran in at a track (jennings gp in florida) that I still feel is one of the fastest tracks I've ridden due to what felt like an average skill level far beyond what I was accustomed to for novice.

When I used to race, I thought it was about the racing.
When I do track days, I thought it was for fun.

I was wrong on both counts!

For me the addictive part, that I realized much later, is the concentration that you get into. For 20 minutes or so, NOTHING else exists! It's you and the bike as one on the safest tarmac available creating your own ballet.

After riding the track, you have proven to yourself that yes you can ride fast, yes you can drag a knee, and it is real obvious tyat the track is a pretty safe and comfortable place to do these things. The road is just a few specks of sand and a signpost to the head away from death so after having ridden the track , the road starts to feel very very uncomfortable.

Because you realize how much more dangerous the road really is. Also I think it has something to do with getting your speed fix at the track, you don't feel like you have to go fast on the street.

Because once you ride the track, you come to the realization that it's not about speed -- it's about skill.

It really does change you as a rider. After doing, say, 4 or 5 days, I really noticed that street riding feels different. It's not a "speed fix" thing -- high speeds have never been my motivation -- it's a focus and confidence thing.

Anyone have a better word than 'Loading', or pushing, to describe that addictive gut sinking, jelly legging, tyre squirming, suspension bottoming, rubber shredding feeling ?

More skill = More speed. I believe when you have more skill you're more composed. when you're more composed and aware you automatically go faster. I suck = I go slow... lol when I stop sucking so much, I might actually go fast... My best lap time on a Ninja 250r is 3:14 and the fastest lap time on a Ninja 300 that I know off is about 2:3x. So you probably can guess how terrible I am...

Looks like you were having fun though. From the video it looked like the front end was chattering in the corners, you might want to spend some money on upgraded suspension or tires.

i wanted to do track because i didn't know how people can take the corners so fast. Then after i got a good pace in the corners i wanted to drag knee. After dragging knee i want get smoother.

Well now i'm just focusing on being smooth. I'm not smooth enough - must do more trackdays!
