I get a kick from riding "fast" with flow. By "flow", I mean: working myself at the peak of my ability for a sustained period of time. If I go beyond my own ability I get out of flow; I experience sketchy moments and I lose that sense of control and domination over my bike my environment. If I go well under my peak ability I also lose my flow: I get bored and sometimes I experience sketchy moments due to being distracted or unfocused.

I also get a kick from hearing my engine scream, from being leaned over in a corner and from feeling strong forces as I accelerate or brake hard.

I also like managing all the risks and dangers of the road in real time. It takes skill, attention, prediction, trained reflex and a warrior-like commitment to action in the face of danger.

Finally: when I'm riding fast with flow I like not experiencing certain things. I like that I don't experience mind chatter or worries. I like that I don't experience anything social or judgemental. I like that my empathy is tuned down so my experience becomes more about me. When I'm riding fast with flow it's just me in my universe doing one thing and doing it with all of my mind, body and attention.

That's what motivates me to ride fast.

Depends on how much you value the technique and skill involved in going to the bathroom, vs. the sheer thrill of it all.

Either
1) higher speed limit signs
Or
2) stupidity

2 wins out more often than 1

Yep, on public roads that is. However, I have to admit the my little 07' 250 has me doing 80 in a 55 more than I want to admit. Maybe it my 15/42 gearing. Dunno. 6th gear is essentially an overdrive gear.

Right! Actually I don't think police radar easily picks-up a signal from a motorcycle - at least it used to be that way. The cops here in Michigan are really decent folk. They don't harass you if you don't deserve it - not like New Jersey Cops.

Sorta always has been. Or never will be. Depending on if you count the final drive or not.

6th gear ratio is 25/28=0.893
Final drive ratio is 42/15=2.80
Overall ratio is 0.89*2.8=2.50

Thinking about it, I go fast for the precision and calculated risk

I'm a crasher, always have been and likely always will be. To a point where I cannot remember all of my crashes, thankfully I learned to ride on tracks early enough to catch this before I went through someone's house or something of the sort.

As a result of this I'm also a racer, racing is the one place where I can ride completely freely while trusting everyone I'm riding with to be pushing towards the same goals. Hitting those marks within inches of precision while riding flat out on the limit. Fully aware that missing a mark by as little as a few inches can cause either losing time or a crash due to the pace.

Then there is that glorious feeling of having a bike cranked over with the throttle wide open and the exhaust screaming while you pick the bike up and switch knee to knee so you can flick the bike back to the other side. The feeling when the front slips just a bit during the transition but the rubber holds. Followed by the feeling of the bike pushing you forward through the corner exactly where you told it to go while you're already preparing for the upcoming braking zone. It's nothing short of sublime when you hit everything right. The sport has its downsides, potential for injury and death being the primary ones, but there is also nothing else in the world like it when everything clicks and flows together.

From the original post.....

Quote:
Those who love the elegant art and science of riding... the blissful feeling of a corner taken perfectly, of braking just right, nailing the apex and driving out.
I think you see where I'm coming from, vs. the "bro" we've all seen F***IN' SENDING IT.

Ben, some years back when I first encountered you here (but had not yet met you) you were talking about riding on rural Maryland 2-lane roads at 100+ mph. My feeling then was "not a guy I'd want to ride with" because I got the impression of an adrenaline-seeking, speed-obsessed young man: classic squid.

Then you hit the track and became one of the most serious, committed racers I know. Your post above tells me that it's the feeling of skill and precision that, deep down, is what truly gets you motivated.

So what motivates this guy to ride fast? IMHO, adrenaline pure and simple. Young, invincible and going for the thrill of speed.

Watch the first 30 seconds or so until he takes off. You can skip the next six minutes if you like. Outcome at about the 6:30 mark.

Was that a 250 or the new 400?

I can't believe the guy's explanation after the crash, "black is the fastest color!"

I can see where you're coming from @adouglas

I started out full squid but changed along the way. The people I met and the experiences that I have had led to massive amounts of personal growth during my transition from squid to racer. When I was doing triple digit speeds down rural md roads in the rain I was not the type of rider you would have wanted to ride with. It was not dissimilar to the rider you posted a video of.

The biggest catalyst for that change is on these forums. @csmith12 who took me under his wing and provided the direction I needed to channel my need to go fast into this sport rather than continuing to be a squid.

Yes. Green caps on the BPF forks is the giveaway.

And as much fun as Ninjettes are, they don't perform like that.
