Fighting tension

I realized I was really tense this past week (relative fighting cancer), I have had a short fuse (apologies to people on here in advance), and I am just overly sensitive to things lately. So I've been doing a little yoga to help relax me and "center" myself once again. I did yoga for a year or two previously and loved it...then school took over my life and I have drifted away from it.

I did one workout and immediately started to feel better. I think I NEED to keep this up, especially when things get rough. I still plan on cycling and running, I just need something to help my inner-self. Yoga does work wonders...focusing on the breath as well as stretching out those tense muscles. After my workout I said to myself, "You really need to do this more often". I plan on doing so.

Anyone here try yoga?

Been slowly getting back into it to help with back and shoulder tension, as well as overall strength and flexibility.

yes, as a fitness professional i work out at a pretty high intensity 6-7 times during the week (mon-fri). this comes from my personal workouts and leading classes for gym members. by the end of the week my body is trashed and i need something to relax and refresh. i've been doing yoga every friday for about 2 months and it works wonders. i'd recc. it to anyone.

I personally hate working out, which is why I'm so fat . I watch action movies or play video games.

Mark, Sorry to hear about your relative. The good news is that Texas has the best Onclogists in the country thanks to Lance Armstrong. I found LAF.org very helpful when I was in the dumps. There is a real live person on the other end. LAF has it really together. As for yoga--I plan to enroll in a class at the Y. Be good to yourself, Mark.

I actually just started going to the gym about a month ago, and the first thing I did was hit up a yoga class, since I'm naturally really flexible and figured improving my strength and balance could help my riding (Most of my self improvements somehow end up tying into riding ^^;; ). While my instructor describes the class as "yoga with a slight athletic twist," at it's core, Yoga's WAAAAAY more intense and difficult than I thought it would be. But it's also an amazing workout and I always feel incredibly refreshed afterwords.

It's funny- it looks so simple in movies when they just show some prissy housewife doing it in their spare time, and whenever I tell anyone about it, they associate it with easy stretches for pregnant women or something. But in actuality, holding upward facing dog for even just 2 minutes after 10-15 minutes straight of constant arm-centric exercises is straight up brutal- especially when you're out of shape

Good stuff. For those moments, I can be dripping with sweat, breathing really heavily, and yet completely at ease with myself. It's nice to have a routine that doesn't neglect a single muscle. Good to see it's helping you through some tough times. Keep on keepin' on

tiffani,

you're experience is spot on. yoga is usually very humbling to people who think they are "in shape", but have never done yoga before. keep going, it gets easier - still a great workout though.

Yoga is awesome!

Focusing on the breath is so key to relaxing when things get rough. When I injured my back, I started doing just 10 minutes of meditation most days. I've stuck with it and it's reduced my anxiety levels significantly.

I hope your relative gets well soon! Cancer sucks.

Often people run through the poses and don't realize how much benefit you get from holding them so long. People say plank (i.e.- Push Up position..for non-yoga types) is easy. Well try to hold it for about 30-seconds (with proper form), then do some other poses and come back to it again. Trust me, it isn't all that easy.

Just doing sun salutations at a very low speed can burn you. Holding each pose for 3-5 breaths can really make you sweat. I run through it faster when I want to relax and just do some stretching, slower if I want to feel it.

I won't question the value of yoga...I just have a hard taking anything seriously that gives its exercises names like "sun salutations."

I'm just messing with you all - I do pilates now and am considering yoga.

I just think the pose names are a little too...poetic for some. I think this alone may push some people away form yoga who may have otherwise benefited.

i have tried yoga, and man its intense.

but my normal work out is sex. it helps with tension and overall strength while trying to move and keep the rythem and it also helps with flexibility, especially in the tough to get into positions

P.S. i'm sorry to hear about your relative.
