I'm pondering trading in for an R3. What do you all think comparing the Ninja 400 with the R3? One of the guys at the shop told me a Ninja 300 modded ends up being around the same performance stats as a stock R3 but I haven't talked to anybody about a 400 in comparison.

Most of my friends here ride R25 (smaller cc). Yes, the stock R25 / R3 is way much more faster than a ninja, but the bike handling is terrible if to compare with a ninja. Not only that, the first gen of the R25 had issues such as the oil pump and clutch pressure plates. Not sure if the model for the States has this similar problem thou.

I would suggest for the new Ninja 650 for your new upgrade. Not only the characteristics of the bike is different than the older model, the engine is also different.

Seems like a big jump to hit a 650. Have to look at them. Thanks for the suggestion!

I have owned a 650 parallel before. Of course you'll get a bigger displacement, a little torquey than the ninjette, but the power is still manageable than an inline four of the same cc.

Yeah, the 650 is tamer than the 600.

I don't buy that 300/R3 comparison. The Ninja 300 and R3 are direct competitors in stock form.

Rule of thumb: If you want to see what bikes are solid, look at what track riders are gravitating to and look at the performance parts aftermarket. I'm seeing a lot of R3s these days.... not as many Ninja 300s, thought it is certainly a viable ride. There's a decided lack of interest in other bikes in the class, notably the Honda CBR300. I think I've seen exactly one CBR250 in four-plus years at the track.

Haven't heard of any issues with the R3.

The Ninja 400 is going to be a noticeable bump up, much as the 300 was a noticeable move up from the 250.

If you're thinking about trading soon, the best deal is going to be for a Ninja 300. As a discontinued model (being replaced by a bigger bike AT THE SAME PRICE no less), dealers will be anxious to move them out the door. If you can wait until next year, look for absolutely screaming deals before the 2019 riding season starts.

One of the other motorcycle mags/web sites has a comparison that includes the R3 and the Ninja 400 still wins. They rated them #1 Ninja 400, #2 KTM 390, #3 R3, #4 Honda #5 Suzuki.

That's about right.

The R3 has 10% more displacement and about 10% more power than a Ninja 300. For the street, pretty sure a Ninja is still a better choice.

The Ninja 400 is significantly ahead of both from the sound of it.

As far as the KTM being rated second in another comparison, I've ridden one a fair amount and have been underwhelmed by the engine (single). Boring, even compared to an older Ninja 250 IMO.

Good to know, thanks. A local mechanic told me that the R3 and ... can't remember if it was Honda or Suzuki but they have weak clutches.

I sat on a KTM in the shop and didn't like it at all.

I like the idea of a new bike but I don't really want to give up my current bike.

Still pondering.

Me too. A lot of the new offerings are really appealing (and I have enough cash saved up to buy a new bike whenever I like) but every time I give it serious thought, I wind up deciding to just stick with what I've got.

Yep. I *like* my bike!

Then again, I'll like a new bike, too.

We'll see.

Never tried a N400 but I rented an R3 for a weekend. The bike looks really good because it's still new, but just like any bike the gleam will leave the paint in a couple of years.

Power wise, I couldn't really feel any difference in pick up between N300 vs R3. You might like the CBR500 better, than bike pulls off the line compared to the other 300cc bikes. Rode a 500r from Norcal to Socal a couple of times very nice.
