Ninja 400 intake and exhaust mods with dyno results

This was posted elsewhere, but thought it should be in here as well (I didn't see it anywhere in the 400 section) -

https://www.norton-motorsports.com/2...dyno-shootout/

Some pretty extensive testing, thanks to Norton Motorsports.

there's really nothing posted in the 400 forum. funny how it started as a 250 forum, had a decent amount of members with 300's when they came out, and maybe three 400 owners here. i have always liked this forum, too bad its slowed down so much. when i joined it was moving along at a pretty good clip.

I probably should have put this is the 400 Tech Talk section.

Maybe mods can move it.

Funny how all the 400 dyno charts I've seen have a flat top end. My old race 300 gained right up to the redline. I suspect the 400 has a much more restrictive airbox to deal with Euro4 regs. And those racing supersport rules are stuck with it. The bike is choking. Damn the bike could really see gains with pod filters.

My buddy who bought my old 300 is now building a 400. I hope he's not disappointed with the dyno results.

Most likely milder cam-specs. Easier to pass emissions that way. Also hefty low-end torque compared to 300 and 20-lbs lighter too!

Yes Norton suggests cutting the air box and removing the snorkels with their velocity stacks.

Yeah, supersport racing classes aren't allowed to modify the airbox. Maybe that's a good thing for the 400... to choke it off and let other older bikes still be a little competitive with it.

I hated the 400 when it came out, just messing up all the race classes. I was getting pissed off that the makers can't standardize on a class like 600 and 1000. But outside of that there's no denying that it's a nice bike.

Changing the velocity stacks for ours completely wakes up the top end, even if you don't cut up the airbox. But cutting up the airbox and removing the snorkels just gives it the last little bit to maximize the gains from our velocit stacks.

For the Norton motor sports guy. Try my Dual stack idea. Basically make the primary stack as short as possible whilst maintaining a smooth intake radius with the correct taper. Then add a secondary velocity stack mounted in line with the primary one, where the base of the secondary is inline with the top of the primary. Make the secondary as long as reasonably possible, with a proper full curved top.

The short primary gives the best high RPM flow & the secondary catches most of the pulse wave from the short stack at lower rpms & reflects it back as if from a longer stack as well as straightening the air flow.

I can send a diagram/picture of the setup I have on my 800. Be worth it to see if it improves airflow throughout the rpm range !
