05 R6 throttle tube is 1/4th turn. Basically, the same turn as the stock/OEM throttle tube on 08+ Ninja 250. Now, i dont know whats the turn on a pre-gen OR if a R6 throttle tube is a fit.

Basically, 06+ R6 throttle tube is 1/5th turn.

For reference, the pregen tube + ziptie = 1/5 turn throttle.

From this, I assume that the pregen and newgen throttle tubes are the same diameter. Both have 7/8 bars.

Just did an 06+ r6 throttle tube swap on my newgen,

a little spray of grease before screwing together the tube cover and it works perfect!

love the shorter throttle

The tube fits and also takes up all the slack in the throttle so you have to back out your adjusting screws all the way.... Test riding in a bit.

From my experience the OEM cable is too short for the R6 throttle so what I was forced to do was take a hacksaw to about 1/2 a cm of the plastic guide that is inside the throttle housing. It's the black plastic piece that curves and is the last piece that covers the cable. After that the throttle could be closed all the way and the idle could then be adjusted.

As far as its performance I like it a lot you have to get used to it a little bit because it pulls hard in the lower rpms then you have to twist your wrist the rest of the way for the upper band. I'm not sure how everyone else managed to get theirs on without modifying the accel. cable but I did have to modify mine or else the throttle stayed open. I could have filed down the tube itself but I didn't want to lose the leverage (would defeat the purpose).

Justin, did you attempt adjusting the nuts on the throttle bracket before hacking up anything????

Those are there to allow slack. I have a 1/5 turn throttle by using a ziptie without issue. Throttle closes just fine.

From http://www.svrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=81464:
Quote:
Up thru 2005, all R-6 use the same throttle tube, part 5SL-26240-01-00. This one is 36.5mm.

From 2006 til now, they use that same part number for the "S" model, but all the other R-6 models use a different one, part 2CO-02640-00-00. This one is 40.5mm.
Those numbers match up pretty well with icbm's post.

Also keep in mind that the percentage of a turn will vary based on how far the cable has to be pulled to open the throttle all the way. Going to a bigger/smaller wheel on the throttle tube will always result in less/more throttle travel on the same bike (as the larger diameter means a longer circumference, meaning it's pulling the cable further). Depending on how the other end of the cable is setup though, different bikes could have different throws even with the same throttle tube. My '09 EX500 uses the same 46019-1077 throttle assembly as the '07 EX250, and it's 1/4 turn (90°) from fully closed to WOT, compared to the 180°+ described by Purspeed.

Based on the experiences posted here and the info at http://www.gixxer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213953, I'd guess (since I don't want to take mine apart) that the PreGen/500 throttle tube's wheel diameter is similar to the 33.5mm on the GSXR 600. The throw on my 500 seems just a bit too long - I feel like I have to bend my wrist a little further than I'd like to get that last bit of throttle (I can't imagine needing over half a turn). I may look into a NewGen throttle tube for a little extra cable pull.

I'm very glad to see this thread is still alive.

Allow me to clarify a few points. First, when using glues or paints, preparation is key. You must clean everything like you suffer from a bad case of OCD because the better your surface prep is, the better the glue (or paint) can stick. Even a little bit of residue can seriously weaken a bond.

That said, I tried double-stacking zip ties to have even faster WOT response and the result was BINDING. What that means for you is there is a point of diminishing returns. A modestly thick zip tie is what you want along side clean bearing surfaces and glue. Superglue is incredibly strong, hard, UV stable and has only one weakness: acetone. Acetone is superglue's kryptonite. So, if you must remove superglue, use acetone (but be careful because acetone will also attack polymers...plastics).

Whoa! Went a little off topic...back to binding, you will not experience binding if you do the mod as shown. If you use a thicker zip tie or double stack the zip ties, you will run into binding issues.

Question about using an R6 throttle tube:

If you look at this picture, the channel in the tube that the cable passes through is only 1/8" or so long.
http://www.ninjette.org/forums/attac...8&d=1249856260

The pictures of the part from a Yamaha R6 I can find, however, show a much longer channel.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motion-Pro-N...4aab02&vxp=mtr

Can anyone who's used one of those comment on the need to trim that channel down so that the cable isn't partially pulled when the grip is in the idle position? That looks like it would use up pretty much all of the adjustability that's built into the stock linkage.

Update: I actually bought an R6 throttle tube.

The diameter of the cable spindle portion is 36.6mm. This is 1 or 2 mm greater than my Ninja 500R's throttle tube with 1 zip tie attached, and probably 3-4mm wider than the bare 500 part.

The channels I asked about previously are every bit as big as they look in the photo. My caliper indicates that I'd need to find an extra 8 to 10mm of slack in the opening cable to make it work, unaltered. Subjectively, I don't think there's an extra 10mm of slack to be found in the 500's cables.

I have not attempted this yet, as I don't have an extra rubber grip for the R6 tube, but it appears that 5 minutes with a dremel tool would solve the slack problem. Just grind off 8mm or so of the channel on opening side, and you'd be good to go.

I haven't yet done the swap on my EX500 either, but I did get a NewGen throttle tube from PartsNinja.

If you're thinking about the old R6/R1 tube, it seems the NewGen tube is the same size, so it should give the same results and be less work to install (since the wheel is the same style). Based on your measurements, it looks like the PreGen/500 has the same size wheel as the 750 Turbo in icbm's pic. I also plan to take a pic like this of the old part once I do my swap.

I ended up just using the 500 part with a single zip tie, as I felt like it was just right as it was. That bike is out of action for now, waiting on the o ring for one of those funny coolant pipes that sticks out of the top of the cylinder head.

Since then, I've also bought a Ninja 650, which, even when it's new, seems to come with throttle cables that are about 1/4" too long, meaning there's a TON of slack before it starts opening the throttle. Seriously, like 30 degrees of twisting. I looked at every single one in the dealer here in Austin, and even another at a dealer in California while I was there on business, and every single one of them was like this. I don't think it's because my cables are stretched.

I tried using the Yamaha throttle tube I had on it, and the extra length of the channels took up the slack perfectly, and brought it back into the range where the built-in adjusters could get it right. It also makes the throttle quicker, which I happen to like.

Thanks for the throttle assy pics

Just reinstalled my carbs and had taken the throttle housing apart to get slack...
Was taking too much time to figure out how exactly the reassemble the sucker - your pictures were a huge help - really appreciated.

Thumbs up

Just did the R6 throttle mod with the 2008 and later R6 throttle tube. Man, what a difference. All the down low stumbling is gone. Pulls of very strong in 1st. Not strong enough to power wheelie, lol. Makes the bike more fun to ride!

Good write up!

After using the zip tie mod for years I splurged and bought the Rev 2 Motion Pro throttle cam/tube system and holy SMOKES what a difference. Smooth throttle action and snappy response. Put the most aggressive cam in and it's about an inch of rotation to pull WOT.

Hi!

I'm going to do this mod .. but I wonder why zip is not on the entire width of rolgas? will the cable dont fall off with a smaller zip?

You can use wider zip if you want. Lateral location of cable is determined by hole in guide.

I did a quick test but I have to spend more time on it.
Until the switch is mounted in the right place, everything is ok, but after twisting the screw gives the impression that there is too much cable, the rolgas does not return to its place and does not close the throttle. regulation doesn't help

Not shown here, but on Norton's Ninja 400 mod with R6 tube, they show you have to widen guide where cable exits/enters to account for larger tube. Might be some extra friction causing cable to not return to stop

There is a piece you have to cut\grind off on the 400 for the larger newer generation R6 throttle tube to fit.

I got the newer generation R6 throttle tube for the 250. I had to cut part of the plastic guide for the throttle wire for it too fit.

OOPPPSS.....just remembered, I did ride the 250 with the newer R6 throttle mod, me likey for sure!
Haven’t had a chance to ride either bike with the newer generation R6 throttle mod, both bikes had the older 2003-2005 R6 throttle tube. I did like the old R6 throttle mod, so I am sure I will like the newer R6 throttle mod even better with the shorter throw!

Last futzed with by JFMNINJA400; January 6th, 2020 at 06:36 PM. Reason: Forgot I did ride the 250 with the newer mod

Just tried this on my 2002, worked like a charm. I'm assuming I did it correctly as I did not need to adjust anything after I was finished.....choke, cable at throttle etc. .....Thanks alot!!!

What's next for more Low end/take off SPEED???? Lol..I removed snorkel and air filter and have yet to replace it w/ anything. I do like the different exhaust sound but it have to assume that its not the best for the bike. I'm leaning towards front sprocket change as long as I do not lose too much top end speed as I do ride on the interstate occasionally.
