Serious delay in gauge cluster

Hey guys, quick question.

I'm at about 17,000 miles now and have recently noticed a problem with my gauge cluster. Upon starting my 2008 model, whether the engine is hot or cold, the gauge cluster (speedometer, tachometer, gas gauge) seems to have a long two or three minute delay before the needles rise.

Weirdly enough, if I tap my finger on each gauge, the needle will rise. Also, on the speedometer, when I hit about 20 mph the needle will just jump up out of nowhere.

I tried to see what the problem was. I lubed up the speedometer cable but I was wondering if this could be a problem with the actual electronics.

Thanks everyone!

hmmm... that does sound odd. perhaps water in an electrical connector that leads to the dash that supplies all of these functions? has your bike been subjected to a lot of water/moisture?

Yeah. I park it outside because I live in an apartment complex -- no cover. I've also driven it in some terrential downpour from time to time.

What could I do to get the water out?

I would remove the side fairings and see what connectors there are leading up to the dash area. Take them apart and spray them with an electrical contact cleaner. Inspect them for any green corrosion at the metal pins/contacts. if any, clean it off, spray some silicone spray on the connectors and reinstall. you might want to use some dielectric grease on the connector if you do find corrosion of any sort.

if not a connector problem, check to see if there is a PC board of sorts in the dash itself that is being affected by moisture/water intrusion.

might want to invest in cover if you park the bike outside.

see if that helps/fixes the problem.
