$20 cold weather solution
I've tried many ways to keep the cold air out of my helmet and jacket over the years. Scarves, bandannas, nothing was very effective. I've tried a balaclava but don't like it under a full face. But I found a $15 helmet skirt from Cycle Gear. It would not stay mounted to the helmet, so I used adhesive velcro. And this $5 head and neck warmer from Wal Mart. It is the best combo so far. Very little wind gets in the helmet, and it keeps air from entering the jacket thru the collar.
On a really cold day it helps to put tape over the holes. This is how the head and neck warmer is meant to be used. This is how you wear it with the helmet.

I got one of those 5 dollar neck warmers from Walmart last winter, and it is by far the best piece of winter gear I got. It doesn't look windproof, but I've worn it in well below freezing temps combined with a balaclava, and my neck never got cold. I hate my neck being cold, so I wear it a lot when off the bike too.

as long as it works right? I got a balaclava with goretex, a bit on the expensive side, but it's windproof and keeps me warm below 45. above 45, I'm pretty comfortable. I know what you mean about wearing one tho. It takes a bit of getting used to. I wear glasses too which makes things a bit more challenging. It tends to fog up my glasses really fast until I get on the freeway. My shoei RF-1100 comes with a chin skirt too so between that and the balaclava, I can't feel a thing inside.
