Kick stand spring came off...

Was out riding when out of no where the kick stand spring came off, I didn't know it actually came off until I switched into first from a red light to head off. Bike just stopped, had to cable tie it up to the rearset and ride to a mates place who has a rear stand and reattach the spring. One thing that got me very paranoid was that if I was riding, then the kick stand came down, would the bike stop, causing the wheels to lock and result in me flying over the handlebars? Scary thought .....

No...no.

It wouldn't be that dramatic. It would be like turning your kill switch off while riding. Bike will turn off but you will continue to move forward. Best thing to do in the event is what would be natural anyway, pull the clutch in and apply the brakes equally.

Alright cheers mate, I was full paranoid hard out!

What could have caused the spring to come loose and fall out of it's groove? I've put it back together, is there anything I can do make sure it never happens again?

I'm not real sure what would cause the spring to come off. Apparently it has happened to others as well.

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=30041

I'll be looking at both my bikes later to see what may cause this.

I've never seen an issue with a kickstand spring. After all they are just springs, not much can go wrong.

I picked up a used '08 and the kickstand spring fell off the first time I took it to the track. I replaced the spring with one I had from a pre-gen bike and haven't had a problem since.

It's actually two springs siamesed to one another. During the service I was performing a week ago I discovered that one, but only one, of them had come off the peg on the kickstand leg.

Weird. Just another one of those things to check, I guess.

Y'know, we've gotten so spoiled by ultra-reliable, near-zero-maintenance modern automobiles that we tend to assume that nothing will ever go out of adjustment or need fixing. My Honda Fit doesn't need ANYTHING except routine oil changes and replacement of normal wear items (tires, brake pads, wipers) for 100,000 miles. Back in the 60s having a car go that long before completely falling apart was pretty much unheard of.

It's just not that way with a bike, especially one originally designed 23-odd years ago (I'm counting the newgen here... it's basically the same bike with a mild refresh).

It vibrates and stuff gets loose. That's just the way it is. In the one year and 6,000 or so miles I've had it I've already had a bulb failure (probably due to vibration) and lost a couple of fairing fasteners (I now loctite every single bolt I touch, every time, except for the oil drain plug and filter bolt).

Guess you're right Andrew, just another one of them little things I need to check daily. The thought of even looking at the spring didn't even come across my mind, but now I check everytime I go for a ride and even during the ride itself.

Resurrecting an old thread.

Was out riding today and my kickstand spring came off. Fortunately I was at low speed. Freaked me out because if it happened at speed when I was leaned over it could have levered me right off the bike.

Something else to check every time I get on.
