[motorcycle.com] - Vicki Golden is Golden in Toronto, Almost!

From a Vicki Golden press release.

It was a red-letter day in Canada for Team MicroBilt/PRBC Suzuki’s Vicki Golden. Golden qualified her Suzuki RM-Z250 inside the Fast 40, which meant she made the evening program inside Toronto’s Rogers Centre and flew the Team MicroBilt/PRBC colors by racing a heat and a LCQ in front of 50,605 fans.

With Team MicroBilt/PRBC Suzuki’s main 450 rider Ronnie Stewart still sidelined during his rehab from pre-season injury and the contract of fill-in rider Alexander Nagy complete, the pressure was all on Golden’s shoulders in Toronto, as she was the lone entry for the squad.

Yet in spite of the intense spotlight on her, Golden turned in a solid timed qualifying performance. It wasn’t without a bit of drama. In the first session she clocked a 1:10.640, which would not be fast enough to put her into the evening’s racing program. Amazingly though, she somehow found a way to chop nearly four seconds off her lap time in the second timed session and with a 1:06.754 lap she qualified 37th, putting Golden in the 250 East Supercross program for the first time this season and only the second time in her career.

“So far this season I’ve been feeling a lot more comfortable on the bike,” Golden explained. “My times really didn’t show it, but I knew we were heading in the right direction. Finally, it all came together in that second session. I think that might have been one of my best qualifying sessions ever and it was great to make the night show and represent MicroBilt/PRBC Suzuki in front of a packed house.”

Golden went on to finish 19th in the second heat race and then 17th in the Last Chance Qualifier. It marked a great performance for Golden and showed that both she and the team are on the right track in their quest to get Vicki into her first main event.

Golden’s racing exploits are being covered by a video crew this year. What does it take to be a top athlete in the sport of Supercross? The Vicki Golden Project looks into the physical and emotional grind it takes each week to show up on Saturday night ready to race. You can watch Episode One below.

The series now heads to Michigan next Saturday, March 19, with its annual visit to Detroit’s Ford Field. The race will be shown live on Fox Sports 2 starting at 7:00 pm Eastern.
