DIY: 600 Mile Service

I am attaching as a word doc file the DIY that I wrote for the 600-mile service. It isn't complete right now, as it still needs the pictures added in, but it has been raining here and I haven't had a chance to add them in. I can refer you to the appropriate pages in the service manual if you need to see the pics, and I will edit this post when I get the pictures added in
I would copy the text into the post, but it's long and would get broken up, and right now there are dynamic links contained within the document.

EDIT: Pics now included!
Attached Files
File Type: doc 600 mile service manual.doc (664.5 KB, 1405 views)

Whew now I know why they spend a few hundy at the dealer for the 600 mile service! lol

I still need the huge sockets for the steering bolt, swingarm bolts and axle bolts! My jixxer axle sockets didn't fit. Also need new cotter pins to adjust the wheelbase (chain slack). Will have to look up/find the sizes on those sockets.

Need to get some spiffy extensions and another ratchet to hit both sides of all the engine mount bolts but I got them as best as I could for now. I've had engine mount bolts come lose in an Integra before and know how bad that feels vibration wise.

As always the plastics were a million times harder to get back on than they were to fall right off.

The rear brake pedal pivot bolt is kinda scary on this bike and hard to get to. I'm gonna pull it back out and loctite it. I forgot how crazy working on bikes is.. you get to see how they're barely held together! I guess that's why it's good to give a hefty pre ride check before every trip out. Seems like you can't be thorough enough!

Sorry to bump an old thread

Anything you guys and gals can think of not on that list that is a common area in need of attention?

check the shifter lever and the rear brake light switch adjustment... 2 things that need to be carefully watched on this bike.

NICE!
SO should i attempt this.. or pay $200 for the stealership to do it??

I looked over it and it seems like its a tad bit out of my mechanical skill level...

aj, it is realy very easy and after you are done you will have the satisfaction of knowing exactly what oil and filter was put in and that everything was tightened to spec. With the steelership you never realy know. The first time may take you a while but after that your confidence will grow and the next time it will be quicker and easier.

Would it be absurd for me to say I think i'm going to have the dealer do everything, then I'll check over their work on my own using the DIY?

The bike has been sitting around for a while without use before I bought it and my only concern is that they'll catch something that I wouldn't have noticed, either as part of the 600 mile service, or something that I never wouldve even noticed unless i was more experienced.

I really rather not give the stealership my money, but I didn't buy the bike new off the lot, it sat in someones garage for a while before I got it.

You think they would let me watch them work on it? or is that a big no no?

It is perfectly acceptable to let the dealership the servicing for you. This DIY just gives you the option to do it yourself. Since the bike has been sitting for a while letting the dealership do the service will let you start with a clean slate and possibly do some of your own maintenance in the future. Watching the dealership will not be an option due to their insurance liability.

What does "free play" mean in relation to the inspections? such as
• Check the throttle grip free play.

Throttle grip free play is how much the throttle grip can turn before it engages the cable. You should be able to turn your grip 2-3mm back and forth before it engages. If it's more than 3 mm and you need to know how to adjust it, let me know

Ah how obvious.. lol
coming up on 600 miles here and I'm just reading through the .doc and making sure I know everything

Another question, does it void my warranty if I do it myself?

No. But keep receipts of any supplies you buy for it, and keep a notepad of the services themselves to show that there is some documentation for it being done.
