Bench Testing A Starter
From what I can tell, the starter is internally grounded. So all you need to do is send 12v down the line and it turns on and starts spinning correct?
I checked and my battery has 12.4+/- .1 at rest. Crank is fine. Solenoid gets power. When cranking power is being sent to the tune of 12.1ish volts to the starter (checked on the starter terminal while cranking). So I pulled the starter and hooked a heavy cable to it, and then touched the other end of the cable to the + terminal on the battery. Nothing. Did I miss something? Just want to confirm before buying one. (Also I noticed that mine says Mitsuba SM-14 12v. My other starter that I thought was the same is actually Mitsuba SM-07 12 V and doesnt actually fit right. Or at least wont sneak in without undoing the coolant hoses. Is it from a different bike completely or is it just an older one?) Hoping to get a response quick so I can pull the trigger on one if I need to. Thanks! |

Correction:
I realized that being internally grounded doesn't mean dont ground it when applying power. It means the chassis of the starter is the ground. So I just tested it off the battery again. First i did the SM-07, I hooked the ground cable to the bolt hole. And touched the positive terminal. Spinning and lots of pretty sparks. So I tried the SM-14 (the one orginally on my bike). Nothing and I saw a little spark when I touched the power to it. So...it's dead dead. |

OHM set to 200 and showing 7-8.1
As I understand it, it should be reading zero. (It does on the good starter at least.) And yeah it I can spin by hand. Its a little clunky, but I dont know how it should feel. The other feels clunky. |

Surely !!!
When they start going bad, there is a lot of electric arcs happening, which erode the copper of the collectors. Could you use those parts from the other starter?
