For real, there's like early 90s sport bikes (that aren't even in that great of condition) starting to go up to $4k+ here, it's ridiculous. The only reasonably priced 250s are all pregens and I don't even want to know what people think their new gens are worth...

Like it or not, motorcycles are a seasonal good.

If you want a good deal on a bike, buy one the very end of the season september / october time, you need to accept the seasonal demand, and use it to your advantage.

It's like people who complain how expensive ice cream is from a vender on a beach in mid summer. They could have brought some from a supermarket in a coolbag, but no so they have to accept the price or don't buy.

Yep!

I sold my Convertible at the end of summer (while prices were still high, in fact higher than when I had checked at the beginning of summer) and then bought a new one in November (when no one wants them)... Same goes for bikes... I have been looking to buy an '09-ish 650 and up till now, hadn't really seen any for sale... Now I have seen quite a few, but all are still a bit out of my range...

250's seem to retain their value quite well because they are so attractive to first-time riders.

$3k is actually pretty damn good price, at least in my area. Depends of course on condition, mileage, and whatnot.

I paid that much for my '09 that I picked up last year. Had around ~4000 miles and was completely stock minus the Yoshi slip-on.

Hell I just looked on craigslist and the only "newgen" under 3k ($2800) has 15k miles on it.

You can nab a pregen closer to 2k though. Dat body style man.

Got a few newly licensed friends. There are Ninja 250s going for more than 500s, 650s, and supersports! Findly them good safe starter bikes isn't easy!

If I was going to pay that much for a 25o, I would do the blasphemous action... raise more money and buy the bigger bike. It wouldn't be that big a difference. Could get a nice 636 for 5k...just saying.

Bought the 140 to start on my parents wouldn't let me unless I got something "safer" and experience first.

250s are still high in value and I would nit expect them to drop too much either. With none of the race orgs going to 300s yet and not even looking to move to them theybare going to remain in high demand. I got a fully modded liter bike for them that 250s are going for.

Also whats wrong with 15k miles on a bike thats nothing, less then a year of riding.

Well I mean yeah I get people will pay what they're gonna pay. But personally I would never pay $3800 for a ninja 250 so that's why "Holy f-" Also, I paid $2400 for mine last year so $1400 more sounds like a lot.

I think $3000 on a slightly used (less than 5k miles) new gen is a decent price. Over $1000 off price of it new, not counting dealer markups. When you think about that is 1/4th original value. Think about it like a car, if you bought a $20k car and drove it for half a year or a year it would sell for around $15k maybe more.

your on the other side of the country and the prices are pretty much the same so they seem to hold thier value everywhere

Selling my 2010 250r with 10.5k miles for $3,000 ($2,400 active ninjette only price).

It could easily go for more in a couple months (hell, it's still snowing here where I'm selling it..) but I found it's usually a bit easier to sell very early like this.

It's a great time to buy a bike in my opinion because you'll have ample time to get everything setup and ready to ride when the weather does brighten up. I'd rather spend my winter shopping for bikes and bike parts and riding in the spring summer than spending spring/summer looking around for one :P

EDIT: Forgot to mention, it can be difficult to buy bikes around this time simply because of availability. This could end up making you pay even more. I had an extremely hard time finding a 2013 ZX6R ABS because most dealerships don't start stocking their bikes until late April. The only one I could find and order was in Philly and ended up costing me a bit more. If I were able to wait until the spring, it likely could have saved me some time and money.

TL;DR: If you can, I recommend buying a bike either late winter or very early spring. Not only because of a potentially lower price, but you'll have more time to prep is as you see fit. Isn't anticipation half the fun anyways?
