freaky carb/fuel issues

if you read my devil's whip thread, i had major problems with fuel/carbs on my ride. getting ready to tear into and find the problem. i did check petcock, mini fuel filter so far which looked ok. almost felt like water in gas or one of my circuits was partially restricted.

Did the condition present itself and degrade during the ride?

Before pulling carbs, drain the bowls and analyze. Water and fuel should separate, easily visible by eye. If water present, may save you a carb pull and solving is obvious.

If no water, nothing less than a carb pull is then called for.

You mentioned it occurred after hitting some big potholes/bumps. Wonder if something got shaken out of place?

it started after pothole hits. subtle at first, just low end, partial throttle. got progressively worse as the ride progressed affecting all circuits. got to the point with any chop of the throttle would cause massive hestitation.

So carbs on this bike hasn't been professionally cleaned/refurbished.

Usual suspects:

- clogged tank vent? Work better with gas cap open?
- petcock's vacuum hose. What vacuum level does it give to petcock? Measure how much petcock flows in 60-seconds at that vacuum level.
- needles, try with 1 washer

Seems hitting bumps did something, i'm just not clear what could happen to carbs by bumps.

there are a couple oddball scenarios possible from extreme shock, but in any event, at this point...this is what is needed

I had the same problem on my 2012 this week after the bike was sitting for 6 months, i try to start it but no luck so i took the carbs off the bike took the bowls off the carbs and found some nasty gel in it,so i clean the carbs put them back try to start it again bike would start and die start and die,so i decided to drain the gas out of the tank to put fresh fuel in it, instead water was coming out for about 10 seconds and than gas started to come out so i put half gallon of fresh gas in it after 3 tries bike started fine and runs good now...Ethanol in today fuel it's the problem with water in the tank and gel crap in the carbs

Rinsing all fuel-related parts with acetone should clear out water. It dissolves both polar and non-polar compounds.

Remove rubber tubes holding carbs to head. Remove all hose clamps completely.
Carefully inspect every inch of these tubes inside & out.
Pry on edges. See if there are any cracks or tears.

Did you have upper and lower mounts of airbox firmly screwed to frame?
